7-11 Giving Away 711 Wii Consoles; Retail Value $299?

About the only thing I like about 7-Eleven is their Slurpees, those frozen concoctions for which I have been known to travel many more miles than is sane or necessary to find on a road trip. Today that changed however, as one of our tipsters, evan, has delivered some interesting news about an upcoming contest from the house that Big Gulps built. The news? That from November through January 31, 2007 7-Eleven will be giving away 711 Wii consoles as instant win prizes.

"November 1, 2006 through January 31, 2007 the following Instant Prizes will be available to be won: (711) Nintendo Wii, ARV: $299.99 USD ($399.99 CDN) each; and (100) $60.00 USD ($70.00 CDN) Video Game Shopping Sprees awarded in the form of VISA® Gift Cards (subject to issuerÂ’s terms and conditions)."

The only thing I'm having a hard time with is that 7-Eleven is listing the retail value as $299, but the optimist in me believes this is because the system is $250 and comes with one game. The super-optimist in me believes it's $200 and TWO games. Here's hoping.

GameSpot does a nice breakdown of this issue that Infendo brought up concerning the 7-11 Wii promotion and a listed approximate retail value of the console stated at $299.

Since Nintendo has already gone on record and said the price of the Wii will not go above the $250 mark, could this 7-11 slip up be a sign that Nintendo changed their mind amidst the hype? Not so much.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that perhaps the 7-11 ARV price would include some sort of package deal with the Wii, maybe an included game. The only sign that this is not the case, is the other products listed in the promotion are consistent with their normal retail value.

At the moment, Nintendo has kept quiet about the whole thing, so we'll all just have to keep a close eye on whether or not the company will go back on their sub-$250 word.

Oh, and by the way, the contest begins Nov. 1.

Nintendo needs to get better at keeping these things under wraps. I think I've seen other companies "give away" the Wii's price and/or release date like 3 or 4 times now...although they all can't be right considering they're different almost every time (and probably none of them are correct). I don't recall this happening as much for the 360 or the PS3 (although the PS3 kind of makes sense they announced the price a release date long before launch).
