Charles Barkley faces gambling debt case
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP)—A prosecutor says retired NBA star Charles Barkley will face felony charges if he fails to repay a $400,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas Strip casino.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger says Barkley will get a chance to make restitution to Wynn Las Vegas to avoid felony bad check charges.

The casino alleges in court documents filed Wednesday that Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, he received last Oct. 18 and 19.

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons. He’s now a basketball analyst for TNT.

Its not that large of an amount... I wonder why he's not paying it?

Are his gambling habits coming back to hurt him?

Not terribly uncommon for high-profile/major rollers to look at Vegas Casino loans as tabs. The Casinos themselves make them seem as "friendly" as possible upfront, like with the comped rooms. This will probably blow over quick for both parties.

Charles Barkley faces gambling debt case
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

AP - May 15, 12:39 pm EDT 1 of 2 NBA Gallery LAS VEGAS (AP)—Retired NBA star Charles Barkley will face criminal charges if he doesn’t repay a $400,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas casino, a prosecutor said Thursday.

“We’re in the process of sending Mr. Barkley notice that we’re considering filing a criminal complaint,” Clark County District Attorney David Roger said. “He’ll have an opportunity like anybody else to make restitution to the hotel.”

The posh Wynn Las Vegas casino alleges in a civil complaint filed Wednesday in Nevada state court that Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, he received last Oct. 18 and 19.

“To date, and despite repeated demands, Barkley has refused to repay the $400,000,” the complaint said.

Barkley is a basketball analyst for Turner Network Television who has made no secret of his gambling over the years.

His agent in New York did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment, and a TNT spokeswoman in Atlanta declined comment.

Wynn Las Vegas spokeswoman Dorothy Land also declined comment, citing ongoing litigation.

Barkley, 45, played 16 seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. He was named MVP in 1993 and was an 11-time NBA All-Star. Barkley also played on the USA Olympic “Dream Team” in 1992 and 1996.

Barkley estimated during a May 2006 interview with ESPN that he’d gambled away about $10 million over the years.

“Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem,” Barkley said. “But I don’t consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble.”

He said he never bet on basketball, and only bet in casinos. He called it a bad habit that he intended to continue.

Wynn goes after who don't pay up, regardless of who it is.

Wynn's hotel filed a lawsuit against a Richard Wang, who took a $1.5 million marker from Wynn, and an Ah Fong Chang, who still owes Steve $500K from a $1 mil credit line.

How do you say "totally effed" in Chinese?

Yeah, I remember one episode in Soprano, this one dude plays Tony's poker game, and broke. Tony says to him "my friend you should go, you have a business, and a family, you don't belong here". The guy didn't listen and kept playing, then Tony lent money to the guy, and he lost everything. The debt was piling up by day(at some ridiculous rate), the guy thought Tony cares about him like a friend and would forgive his debt. The next thing you know he's whacked without mercy by Tony and Tony took his business like a Champ without remorse.

    Don't mess with the mafia.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Charles Barkley acknowledged he owes a $400,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas Strip casino and promised Thursday to repay it after a prosecutor said the retired NBA star faced criminal charges.

"My mistake," Barkley said in an interview at a pro-am golf tournament in Hoover, Ala. "I'm not broke, and I'm going to take care of it."

Barkley was responding to comments by Clark County District Attorney David Roger, who said prosecutors would file a criminal complaint if he did not pay the debt cited by the Wynn Las Vegas resort.

"He'll have an opportunity like anybody else to make restitution to the hotel," Roger said.

The casino alleged in a civil complaint filed Wednesday in a Nevada state court and first reported by the Las Vegas Sun that Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, received last Oct. 18 and 19.

"To date, and despite repeated demands, Barkley has refused to repay the $400,000," the complaint said.

In a radio interview with sports station WJOX in Birmingham, Ala., Barkley repeatedly blamed himself for letting the debt lapse.

He told radio interviewers and a reporter at the golf tournament that the debt stemmed from a wager on the 2008 Super Bowl. He did not explain why Wynn alleged the loans were made in October.

"I've been gambling 20 years. I've never had this happen before," the 45-year-old Barkley told WJOX. "It's my fault I let the time lapse. I screwed up."

Barkley, now a basketball analyst for Turner Network Television, denied any personal financial problems, and said the casino didn't call him before filing the complaint.

"All they had to do is call and say, 'Hey, you owe us this money,"' he said.

A Wynn Las Vegas spokeswoman did not immediately respond to Barkley's comments. A hotel official earlier declined comment on the court case, citing ongoing litigation.

Barkley could be granted up to six months to pay if he agrees to the standard district attorney's office restitution program, bad check unit chief Bernie Zadrowski said. He would be responsible for the $400,000 plus a 10 percent program fee totaling $40,000.

Roger said that if the case remains unresolved, as many as four felony theft or four felony bad check charges could be filed. The possible penalty for each theft conviction is one to 10 years in state prison. A conviction on a felony bad check charge could carry a one- to four-year term.

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. He was named league MVP in 1993 and was an 11-time NBA All-Star. Barkley also played on the USA Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and 1996.

Barkley has made no secret of his gambling over the years. He estimated during a May 2006 interview with ESPN that he'd gambled away about $10 million over the years.

"Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem," Barkley said. "But I don't consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble."

He said he never bet on basketball, and only bet in casinos. He called it a bad habit, but said he intended to continue.

Steve Wynn is not the mafia. However, when some people kidnapped his daughter back in the day for ransom, the cops found EVERYONE involved in the crime and busted them.

    That's some fast police work.

I am just glad Wynn didn't resort to "conventional way" to make Barkley repay, like having his guys wait outside TNT studio.

Hmm the logic of "I have a gambling problem, but I can afford it"...not sure how this would work out in the long run...

I can tell you exactly how it will work out for him. Within the next decade, Barkley will be broke as hell and will have a bunch of people after him for money he owes, and I will have a very, very hard time feeling sorry for him. He's self-destructing and doesn't even know it; I pity him...

He's a guy with a complete lack of self-control or discipline, and it extends to pretty much everything else in his personal life, not the least of which is his weight problem. I think the guy is hilarious and has a one-of-a-kind personality that makes him such an attraction, but he's a bonehead. No ifs or buts about it.

Barkley is not an idiot, he won't go broke.
Michael Jordan is a huge gambler too, he doesn't go broke either.
$400K is chump change for him.

Even that $1.5 million that Richard Wang guy owes Wynn is chump change.
You don't gamble that much money if you aren't filthy rich.

The people in the NBA that go broke are the ones who make bad relationship problems and investments. Scotty Pippen, Kenny Andersen.

No Barkley will be supremely rich for the rest of his life.

when do you think he's going to go broke? i'm will to wager $100 on it right now!

you know when he played with the Rockets, he drove a truck. not a mercedes etc. he only had one car. He said what's the point of two?
