    West Has Strength in Reserve
    NEW YORK, Jan. 30 -- Stephon Marbury, Anthony Mason, Antonio McDyess and Theo Ratliff will join perennial All-Stars such as Karl Malone and David Robinson in the 2001 NBA All-Star Game, to be played Sunday, Feb. 11, at MCI Center in Washington, D.C.
    The 14 players selected -- seven each from the Eastern and Western Conferences -- were chosen by a vote of the respective head coaches in each conference.

    Along with the first-time selections of Marbury, Mason and Ratliff, selected to the East team were Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse, Milwaukee's Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson, and New York's Allan Houston.

    Joining Malone, Robinson and first-time All-Star McDyess on the West squad are Dallas' Michael Finley, Minnesota's Kevin Garnett, Portland's Rasheed Wallace and Seattle's Gary Payton.

    Previously selected as starters for the East through the Sprite NBA All-Star 2001 voting program were Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, Orlando's Tracy McGrady, Miami's Alonzo Mourning, Toronto's Vince Carter and Detroit's Grant Hill. Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant of the L.A. Lakers, Tim Duncan of San Antonio, Jason Kidd of Phoenix and Chris Webber of Sacramento will start for the West.

    This marks the 13th selection for Malone, tying him for third all-time with Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Cousy and John Havlicek, the tenth for David Robinson, and the seventh for Payton. This is Garnett's fourth All-Star Game selection and the second for Allen, Finley, Houston, Glenn Robinson and Stackhouse.

    Head coaches in each conference were asked to vote for seven players in their conference. They were asked to select two guards, two forwards, a center and two players regardless of position. They were not permitted to vote for players from their own team.

    Also, if any player is unable to participate in the All-Star Game due to injury, NBA Commissioner David Stern will select the replacement.

    Six teams -- the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami, Milwaukee, Orlando, Philadelphia and San Antonio -- are each represented by two players in the All-Star Game. A total of 18 NBA teams are represented on the combined East and West rosters.

    Rick Adelman of Sacramento will coach the West All-Stars and Philadelphia's Larry Brown will direct the East All-Stars.

    The 2001 NBA All-Star Game will be broadcast in more than 200 countries around the world and on NBC, CTV in Canada, ESPN RADIO and NBA.com on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. ET.

    Do you think Shareef got more screwed? What about Shawn Marion? Nitwitz?

    Time for Robinson to stop being overrated every damn year. And time for Malone to turn it down if he doesn't even like going.

    I think that Nowitski got more screwed than anyone else. McDyess has played well, but he's not as versatile as Nowitski. David Robinson really has no business being there. I really wonder how he'd hold up for a whole year without Timmy protecting his back.

    While I think Francis played well enough to be an all-star, I really can't see who I would exclude from the list for him at the guard position. Kidd, Payton, etc certainly merit their spots. It's just a matter of there being a lot of talent there.

    That's too bad. The rules were: select 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center, and 2 other players (of any type) as backups.

    Robinson was selected only because the coaches had to choose a backup center. But by those same rules, the coaches should have been required to choose 2 players who play guard. Instead it's 5 forwards and Gary Payton. If they picked a second guard, IMO Francis would have gotten the call. He earned it.

    No way do the Spurs deserve two representatives in this game, this is total crap. Steve Francis leads a Rockets team that was 35-47 at the end of last season to a .500 season despite a tough schedule and tough conference and what recognition does he get? Nothing. The Spurs who arent even leading the division get 2 representatives, way to go coaches.

    I still can't believe that Jason Williams is there instead of Francis. Jason is getting career lows and isnt very good at all. Francis is much better than he is. I feel that it should be Payton/Kidd/Francis/Finley
    at the guards. One player who really got screwed in the voting was Antawn Jamison. The guy is averaging 25 ppg and 10 rpg. I looked and he was the only player in the top ten scoring that didnt get selected for the All Star Team.

    Marion, Nowitzki, Reef, Francis, Jamison.

    At least Nowitzki and Francis deserved to be there. They are carrying their teams. Nowitzki is a lot more responsible for Dallas success than Finley.

    Predictable. But their time will come. They still have a lot of years ahead of them.

    At least stockton isn´t there. Though i don´t know WHY they would bring Malone again after last year´s fiasco.

    I´m, not the least bit disappointed about this because i never expected it to happen, anyway.

    West Reserves:
    Payton - guard
    Finley - forward
    Garnett - forward
    Malone - forward
    McDyess - forward
    Wallace - forward
    Robinson - center

    Michael Finley plays forward for Dallas, but evidently was selected as a guard.

    Finley has been interchangeable this year at the 2 and 3 spots. He was starting at the 2 more while Nash was hurt. Now they play a two PG lineup with Nash and Eisley at the guard spots.

    Either way, Finley deserved his bid. Nowitzki got the shaft though, as did Shareef.

    David Robinson??? UGH.
