After James Harden had just 6 free throws in Game 1, Clippers worry about how refs will call Game 2

Rockets guard James Harden, who took an average of 10.2 free throws per game during the regular season to lead the NBA, took just six in Game 1 against the Clippers. That has left Clippers forward Matt Barnes concerned about how Game 2 will be called.

“If they allow me to guard James and J.J. (Redick) to guard James, it’s going to be a tough, physical series,” Barnes said. “If they’re going to call every single foul, he’s going to live on the foul line.”

“It’s playoff basketball. James has a great knack of being able to draw fouls and get to the line. That’s where he’s made his living. He’s incredible at that. A lot of times, you look back at that and a lot of the times you can look back at that and a lot of those aren’t fouls. If they allow us to play physical, playoff basketball and make him earn it, it’s going to be a little tougher for him than during the season.”

Harden took an average of 5.5 free throws in the Rockets two regular-season losses against the Clippers and an average of 15 in the two wins. Barnes, however, complained that at times he is not permitted to “touch” Harden without a foul being called.

“Just being able to touch him,” Barnes said of his hope for defending Harden in the series. “He’s so strong. Being able to cut him off and bump him a little bit, I think that was a change. I finally got to get my body on him and wear on him a little bit. The first three, four games, he was living at the foul line. That changed. “

Harden averaged 11.6 free throw attempts in the first-round series against the Mavericks. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said keeping Harden off the line on Monday was probably because of his team’s defense and Harden’s play in general.

“I am sure he is going to be more aggressive, but we have to keep our hands back,” Rivers said. “We have to try to make him make it instead of allowing him to go to the foul line.”

Barnes, however, believed that will be up to officials Joe Crawford, David Jones and Zach Zarba.

Agreed 100%. I was being sarcastic, but it didn't come through very well. Personally, I always thought that criticizing him for being happy on occasion was stupid.

LeBron James said he might have to change his mindset a bit for Game 2 against the Bulls on Wednesday.

"I've never kind of went into a game saying, 'OK. I'm going to be ultra aggressive to start a game,'" James said. "I've always had that feel-out thing, but [during Game 1] it was little bit too much feel-out. I think I only had two shots at one point. I just was not [as aggressive] offensively as I was defensively." James shot just 9-of-22 from the field during the Cavs' Game 1 loss to the Bulls, and also turned the ball over six times. Cleveland will need a more aggressive and efficient LeBron James in order to have a chance at evening up the series during Game 2 on Wednesday
