In a state of continual warfare. From National Geographic:

South Sudan, the world's youngest country, is on the verge of the world's worst famine.

The UN estimates that a third of the country of 11 million are facing starvation unless farmers can plant a critical round of crops before the annual rains hit in May.

Experts believe as many as 50,000 children could die. It would be the most devastating famine anywhere in 30 years.

Since December, when South Sudan's leadership splintered over suspicions about a coup plot, violence has spread across the country, disrupting the planting season, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee, and leaving more than 10,000 people dead.

As the article mentioned, violence has been up since December 2013. A recent massacre took place Thursday:

(Reuters) - South Sudan sent troops to secure a United Nations base after armed civilians fired on displaced tribespeople sheltering there, in an attack that killed at least 48, the president's spokesman said on Friday.

Locals pretending to be peaceful protesters delivering a petition forced their way into the camp on Thursday and opened fire before being beaten back by UN security personnel (UNMISS).

"The army has come in now. They have been ordered to protect UNMISS so there will be no attack from anybody," Ateny Wek Ateny, President Salva Kiir's spokesman, told Reuters by phone.

Thousands of people have been killed and more than one million displaced since fighting erupted in South Sudan in the middle of December, triggered by a power struggle between Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar.

Actually, I hear North Sudan is quite nice this time of year. Especially when nobody is committing ethnic cleansing or genocide or anything like that.

Another massacre today:

Hundreds of civilians, including women and children, were massacred in ethnic violence when rebels seized an oil-rich town in South Sudan, in the single worst atrocity since the conflict began.

Armed troops loyal to the former vice-president Riek Machar, swept into Bentiu and systematically shot dead foreigners and people from enemy tribes. Others from supportive groups were led to safety.

The exact number of people who died in the massacre remains unclear, but at least 200 were killed in the Kali-Ballee mosque in the capital of Unity state, and 400 wounded, the UN Mission in South Sudan (Unmiss) said in a statement.

So much killing

It's horrible. Was just reading another article about the Mosque massacre and UN officials who have seen the aftermath describe it as "Piles and piles of bodies." They are saying this is turning into another Rwanda with the members of the Nuer tribe battling members of the Dinka tribe.

I doubt the World is going to do much. Massacres in Africa don't make the news much and even the oil in South Sudan isn't going to draw in outside forces..
