Why? D&D is for people to discuss such issues.

The Nets wanted a workhorse and a good locker room guy.

Among free agent centers available, I can see why they'd prefer Collins over the more established flakes (Kwame, Darko, etc) available.

What "homosexual" agenda? Are you scared you can be talked into turning gay?

lol @ Christians being a persecuted minority.

You realize fundamentalist fascist bigots like Tebow are the reasons gays don't have equal rights in the first place, right?

I think Tebow has actually opposed some of the more anti-gay Christian groups out there.

Anyway that cartoon is way off base. Tebow was worshiped in the press for years (pun intended). Remember when Verne Lundquist said you would be a better person for meeting to Tim Tebow. Even now Tebow is still gaining press long after he has been out of football.

Like it or not, it was a historic moment. So it got a lot of media attention. In a day and age when Tiger Woods cheating on his wife dominated the news cycle for the better part of 6 months why would they not take 5 minutes of Sportscenter to report that a guy broke a barrier by being the first openly gay player to play a professional sport (in America anyway, I assume all soccer players are gay)?

And that's my point. Jason Collins isn't getting awarded for being gay. Yes there is more media attention but I doubt he is getting more endorsements and teams certainly haven't been rushing to sign him.

he had a post game press conference his first game after signing a 10-day contract?! I wonder if Drew Gooden will get one after his first game with the Wizards....I blame the media a lot, but Collins, if he is really for "equality" and not self promotion should of gone to the press conference and said something to the extent of...

"guys if I wasn't gay we wouldn't be having this press conference. I'm here to be treated like the rest of my teammates, and my performance tonight does not warrant a post game interview, have a good night"

You're mad about a press conference? I wouldn't call having a press conference being awarded because he is gay. As I pointed out this is a socially significant step but at the same time he isn't being awarded because of coming out.

A lot of y'all, not necessarily you balla, simultaneously seem to want to downplay this while at the sametime point out how unusual this situation is with gay jokes.

im not mad at all....I just fight it ironic that in a fight for "equality," said player is getting preferential treatment i.e. post game news conference/increased media attention

Still A LOT of work to do, judging by many of the responses in this thread.

first openly gay play in the history of the major americas sports and some of you are sick of it after what, like 3 days of media coverage?

It's a big deal because, it's a huge step for any athlete out there, and trust Barkley/etcs accounts that there are many gay athletes who just haven't come out for fear of persecution.

Yes, I chuckled a bit at the game recap where they were praising everything he did, but so what? Is that all it really takes to push some of you ever the edge? Get a grip.

With trailblazers of this nature, 'the first' is always going to be heavily scrutnized/disected/etc. Soon, this will fade, and it'll be fine for athletes to be comfortable about their sexuality, to the point where it will be commonplace. And obviously this scare bigots.

    badlee trolling hard.

After watching a few minutes of Keith Olbermann's show last night, I suggest y'all Google "Glenn Burke".
