Three Webster police officers accused of using excessive force

WEBSTER, TX (KTRK) -- A group of officers from the Webster Police Department is on paid administrative leave following a grand jury indictment on charges of Official Oppression.

Three officers are accused of using excessive force on a man during call for service in the Nassau Bay Area back in September 2013.

"You're going to have officers that have problems and yes two of them have had issues, one of them has not," Webster Police Department Assistant Chief Thomas Claunch said.

According to Claunch, three patrol officers -- Colin Murphy, Peter Behler and Daniel Bassett -- were dispatched to assist a Nassau Policeman with a call for service about a man with a gun. The scene was described as a "suicide by cop."

According to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Officer Murphy is alleged to have struck the man in the neck with his gun, kicked him in the face and stomped on his neck while the man was on the ground.

Officer Bassett is alleged to have used a Taser on the man while he was not resisting. Officer Behler is alleged to have kicked the man and struck him with his gun while he was on the ground.

Ultimately, the three Webster officers were accused of using excessive force. Claunch says the Nassau Bay officer is not facing criminal charges.

Claunch says the incident was captured on surveillance cameras in patrol cars and by cameras worn by the officers. The assistant chief describes the accused patrolmen as "young officers."

Claunch says the accused officers will remain on paid administrative leave during the ongoing internal investigation into the allegations.

Just was wondering everyone's thoughts on this, one of my best friends is one of the officers being charged so it's been a hot topic for me personally as of late.

Standard police department procedure while the investigation is ongoing they keep them on leave with pay. If a officer is found innocent after an investigation it wouldn't really be fair to make them starve while it gets figured out.

The whole innocent till proven guilty thing I guess.

The man survived a suicide-by-cop situation, so it obviously could have been worse. But, not really enough info here to go on. Let the justice system play out.
