It doesn't look like the Heat signed Kennedy. Even if they did, it looks like he would have to make the 15 man roster for the Heat to "keep" him on their NBA D league team, if they have one.

I'm thinking Young and Henriquez are cut and placed on Vipers. Covington is also placed on Vipers, but I think it is 50-50 he makes 15 man roster. Canaan will make 15, but start at least half the year at RGV.

Kennedy and Honeycutt would give RGV some stability.

Don't forget reigning MVP Andrew Goudelock. To my knowledge, he is not signed to an NBA contract currently, and there's no guarantee that the Lakers (or any other team) will (re-)sign him, let alone put him on their final 15-man roster.

That said, there may be some concern about having both Goudelock and Canaan on the same roster, as each will dominate the ball.

Canaan will need to learn how to adjust off the ball with Harden being the primary handler, and this could give a similar scenario in the Vipers. The D-League is not solely utilized to develop offensive go-to moves; getting adjusted defensively and with rotations is an important aspect as well. Question is, how to find the balance between off-ball movements like such as if he would play with the Rockets without limiting his touches and opportunities to hinder player development? Pure offensive production has been easy to come by for previous players like Jones, D-Mo, and Morris, but I think Morey will be looking at how he achieves the production before pulling him up.

I thought Goudelock's actually being on Lakers during the past NBA season after his time with RGV would extinguish his returning player rights.

This is the weirdest rule going around.

How a d-league team can trump an nba team just astounds me..

Don't get me wrong i love me some RGV, but come on, how annoyed would he be if he found out he's not playing in the nba because RGV want to hold him back..

    Smh

I think you are reading his reply incorrectly. An NBA team can sign a player away from an NBADL team as long as that player is NBA eligible (i.e. has been able to be drafted) and is not on another NBA team's 15 man roster. However, if an NBA team signs an NBADL player in the offseason and cuts him prior to the NBA season, the NBADL team retains "Returning Player Rights". If an NBA team signs a non-NBADL player in the offseason and cuts him prior to the NBA season, the NBADL team associated with the NBA team that cut the player gets "NBA Affiliate Rights" (for up to three players) since no other NBADL team has "Returning Player Rights" to the player.

If I have misinterpreted your post or BimaThug's in any way, I apologize.

Ohlbrecht has been waived by the sixers. Vipers still hold his D League rights. However, it is questionable if he could rejoin Rockets this season even if they (a) wanted him, (b) Asik is traded, and (c) Camby stays hurt. According to Deeks, being picked off waivers is equivalent to a trade. This interpretation is how NY had early bird rights to Lin. Rockets would not be able to reacquire him for a year under this interpretation. BimaThug thinks the waiver is equivalent to trade in only the regards how it player's compensation status.

From what I've seen, Ohlbrecht will eventually be a decent backup center (i.e. better than Smith).

I'm watching the Rockets/Mavs game on DVR and noticed DJ Kennedy on the Mavs bench ... those scum!!! I doubt he'll be on their roster when the season starts, though.

Yeah, unless he makes Mavs' final 15-man roster or signs overseas (he could probably get a good contract overseas), Kennedy will likely be a Viper this season. Vipers have "first crack" at signing him among D-League teams.

Very surprised that Kennedy has not found a spot in the NBA. Good rebounder from a wing. Decent shooter. Decent scorer. Efficient with ball and willing role player. Okay passer, but does turn it over a little much.
