Since Tracy McGrady announced his retirement from the NBA on Monday, debate has sprung up all over social media as to whether the 16-year veteran is a Hall of Famer. (By the way, he should be.)

On Tuesday, T-Mac himself weighed in on the discussion in an interview with Comcast SportsNet Houston.

“I think my numbers match up with some of the guys that are in the Hall of Fame,” McGrady said. “Whether or not I get in or not, it really doesn’t matter to me. I’m a guy from Auburndale, Florida (with) a population of 10,000 people, grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood, so to me, I’m Hall of Fame just by making it through my career. That’s Hall of Fame to me.”

The main knock against McGrady’s case for enshrinement in Springfield is his lack of playoff success, due partly to injuries that robbed him of much of his prime and partly to the awful teams he spent his best years propping up. He’s right that his numbers stand up against previous inductees — in fact, if he were to fail to make it in, he’d be the first scoring champion in the history of American professional basketball (be it the NBA, BAA or ABA) to miss the cut.

His second comment, though, is more telling. McGrady doesn’t seem bitter about this lack of postseason glory. He has perspective on how lucky he is to have been able to make a career (and a lot of money) out of the game of basketball. He understands that his career will have been worth it even if voters don’t agree.
