BMI Categories: Underweight = <18.5 Normal weight = 18.5–24.9 Overweight = 25–29.9 Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/BMI/bmicalc.htm
My what? What the frack are you talking about? I'm a slender older person. Not skinny, but slender, weighing less than most my age. My "mass" isn't a hell of a lot, you might say, except in one area only of interest to my significant other.
I hereby dub thee "Dickard." For the record, I'm 6'3.5" and a whopping 147lbs for a BMI of 18.1. That I'm considered only slightly underweight makes the whole BMI thing pretty sketchy to me.
BMI is horrible. It doesn't account for muscle to fat ratio. Someone with 300 pounds of fat will have the same BMI as someone with 300 pounds of muscle.
BMI is not supposed to be some amazing tool to track your progress. It has its limitations. It's good for general classification provided you're not the exception. Body fat % also has its limitations. Skinny little guy at 10% body fat vs muscular 250lb guy at 10%..is that a fair comparison?
BMI is utter crap, and even lowered in 1998 by a committee of 'experts' which included three members who had direct ties to pharmaceuticals that manufactured diet pills for profit and a fourth member who was the lead scientist for the program advisory committee of Weight Watchers.
