Went to Amazon today to order something and saw the front page announcement

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for $299 seems ludicrously good after glancing over the details. Am I missing something?

Thinking about getting one and give my old iPad 1 to my cousin...

The only disadvantage is that you can only apps from Amazon, so you can not install all android apps.

Don't even know why Amazon bothers with this - there will be a jailbreak available for it mostly likely an hour after it hits the shelves.

Because the vast majority (99%+) of the millions of Kindles they sell will not be jail broken? I'm a very technical guy but even I have never bothered to jailbreak my iPhone.

If I'm understanding their website correctly, you can get rid of the ads for $15. That kind of undermines the whole argument being promoted in this thread.

According to Mr.Scarface, the ads are worth $200 though.

When I had the standard kindle with ads, I actually used them all the time. Lots of great deals came across the screen. Off the top of my head -

    1) 2 for 1 movie tickets
    2) $20 amazon gift card for $10
    3) Huge discounts on new release kindle books
    4) Lots of free stuff too

IIRC, there was a Kindle Special Offers tread on slickdeals.net.

Anandtech reporting that the "$50 a year" plan is only good for the first year.

I think I've read that rooting a Fire kills its ability to work with Amazon services.

I rooted my Fire. It takes away the seamless integration with Amazon Prime video streaming, but I can use Dolphin to stream movie through the Amazon website if I want to.

Posting from my Kindle Fire HD right now, and even though I've only used it for maybe 30 minutes I love it so far, much more than my iPad. Fits perfectly in my palm like my crank, and the screen is crystal clear. This is perfect for flights, mobile, etc. $199 well spent imo.

You're doing something wrong as I don't get that request and have downloaded many apps. Still love this more than my iPad.

You must have put in some kind of CC when you set it up ..webs full of people complaining about it,so I don't think it's just me.

Do you have an Amazon account?

If it is linked through your Amazon account, it won't keep asking you that.

I don't . I didn't want this thing linked to any kind of an account or CC because of kids using it.I think I'll just get a gift card and link it to that .. The "one click" purchasing and kids seems like a recipe for disaster.
