[Chron] A good day in the Rockets' star search?

Does Williams and Howard and what other pices we combine as a team really beat OKC or say Miami? Guys we need to reuild and groom a super star. I am ok with getting Smith on rental and say trading Lowry to Portland with hopes of getting a top lottery player like Drummond. but this Gasol and Howard and Williams has got to stop.

 

Howard and Williams puts us at the top of the WC alongside SA and OKC. Now, if we can acquire those two and still have Goran's and Lee's bird rights to re-sign or to sign & trade, we are sitting very well. If Morey and McHale and Howard and DWill can convince Goran to re-sign here as the 3rd wheel of our big 3, that makes us a very, very tough team. A backcourt of Goran and Williams would be a killer. Both guys can defend their behinds off, both guys can score the ball, both guys can dribble drive, finish, run PnR, bring the ball up. Both guys can do everything and they're both big enough to switch onto a lot of SFs or SGs and be effective.

DWil/Goran/CP/Dwight/Motie would be a nice bunch. Not to mention re-signing Camby and getting some vets in here.

 

howard/williams is a pipe dream. And what's more ...it isn't in our control. I wish we would take matters into our own hands and embark on a rebuilding strategy starting with this draft.

 

Here's something else, Deron hasn't officially opted out or in with the Nets. He's going to wait until the last minute to do that. If the Nets trade for Dwight, then expect Deron to opt in to the last year of his contract and sign an extension, just like Dwight, with the Nets.

Where it gets interesting is if Dwight gets traded elsewhere. If that happens, and DWill wants to play with Dwight, I really think DWill will approach the Nets about opting in and trading him versus opting out and him leaving as a free agent. Because there is more money in it for Deron if he can get the Nets to move him, and it doesn't leave the Nets empty handed. They may be able to pull an expiring contract (Martin) or a good value player (Scola) and/or a pick (by trading Martin/Scola) out of trading DWill versus losing DWill for nothing.

The other thing this does is allow the team that trades for DWill to still have their full MLE available if they are over the cap.

There is a very high probability both Dwight and DWill get traded and they both sign the extension with their new team.

 

What a depressing article. Essentially, we lost our last good shot of trading for Howard last deadline, Deron Williams is going to Dallas, and we could still have the opportunity to do LA a huge favor by taking Pau's enormous contract off their hands and give them some young guys to build with. Great.

 

I know I'm crazy, but I don't want Dwight anymore. His baby **** is disgusting. If he comes here I will cheer for him of course, but I just picture us trading for him and he just comes and talks bad about Houston the whole time, leaving when his contract is up.

 

Gasol's only getting worse from here on out. His disappearing act in the playoffs the last couple of years is further proof.

 

We don't need to squander money on goran if d-will comes. I don't even think we would have cap room to do it.

 

Don't need cap room. We can offer him more money than anybody else. It wouldn't be squandered money. That would give us a big 3 to rival San Antonio and OKC. Not only that but Goran could be traded at a later date.

We can get both Dwight and Deron and still maintain bird rights to Lee and Goran.

DWill/Goran/Parsons/Dwight/Motie with a bench of Duhon/Lee/Davis/Camby. That's a championship contending team.

I hope Morey isn't wasting too much Kleenex and Jergen's over this. Far too many variables, far too many lining-up of planets. I understand he has to try, I even understand the desperation, but he'll put all his substance into something that won't happen.

And even if it did, we'd wind up with a center with TMac's back and maybe none of the decent picks/decent young players we should keep.

Oh, well. Poker players will be poker players.

 

You're a dreamer my friend and its nothing wrong with that. There is no way deron and dragic are playing together and no way in hell the rockets are getting williams or howard. I'm all for shooting for stars and landing on the moon,but I'm also a realist. Unless the rockets land with davis as #1 pick,they're not getting howard. If hornets got a young stud (gordon) and a looto pick (aminu) kaman, and future picks for cp3,orlando is going to excets that and some for the best big in the game. Utah got picks and players for williams. There isn't any package of young players with upside nor picks the rockets can have to get howard. Sorry,just being real about it. Now if you want to talk about josh smith and guys like that we can,but howard and williams are out of the rockets league unless both had opted out and the rockets would had 30m of capspace to get both.

 

There's only so many places that Dwight can be traded my friend. Tell me who can and will offer more than we will.

I don't see that happening.

1. When is the deadline for exercising the option? DWill might get to wait until the draft night trades to see if Howard will be traded. If he's not traded on draft night, Williams will have to opt out before free agency begins because he won't know if/when/where Howard might be traded.

2. Even if Howard is traded on draft night, Williams has to get himself traded before the option deadline (probably also draft night). Otherwise, he has to opt-in on the faith that the Nets will trade him to the team he wants to go to.

3. It seems highly doubtful that the Rockets (or any other interested team) has enough assets to pull off both those trades at the same time. Especially considering teams like the Nets and Magic won't want high-dollar veterans like Martin and Scola when they've just lost their franchise players.

 

I think the option deadline is July 1st. But I though S&T with UFAs don't work anymore. He's definitely not opting in because he can make more by not doing so. He can sign the max bonus with the nets and then demand a trade when his restriction is up, but I'm not sure he wants to waste another season with the nets if Dwight isn't going there and he risk the chance of not even being traded.

So if we somehow obtain Dwight, the chances of him coming here drastically increase. If not, he stays in Brooklyn or goes to Dallas. If the nets get Dwight, he's 100% staying.

 

Id say D will is a top 2 PG...he is an outstanding 2 way player. You combine that with the best Center (also elite 2 way player). You have built a team with the two most important pieces. Scoring and defense at the two most important posistion...with no real weaknesses.

You then fill the roster with complimentary players and maybe 1 high upside wing or foward position and you have the makings of a perfect team.

I would say...this year.

Dwill (dragic as 6th man)
Lee
Parsons
Scola ( or say motijunas if he plays like we think)
Howard (camby)

would be the best team in the west. The defense and offense combo is better than any team. I would role with that squad happily dreaming of a championship.

 

plus you get d will and howard...I guarantee vets like ray allen would sign on the the cheap to win.

Imagine getting ray allen for the vets min or MLE lol... that kinda stuff happens when you have dwill and dwight.

So yes morey is a genius trying to accquire these guys at all costs.

 

Anyone who says they don't want Dwight because the he appears to be a baby, is like someone in the 90's saying they don't want Michael Jordan because he's a douche.

 

No team has the real assets to trade for both. But if you clear enough cap space so that you can amnesty one player (Scola) and have enough cap space to sign DWill outright, then perhaps NJ does a trade just to get something of value back for him instead of him walking for nothing. That's my point. If Dwight is dealt and the team that dealt for him is in a position to clear cap to sign DWill and DWill then goes to the Nets and tells them he is leaving, then perhaps they do the trade. They need players in New Jersey. Scola is a player. Who else are they going to get to sign to play there? Nobody better I guarantee you that.

Not to mention the possibility opens up of signing and trading Goran for DWill and keeping Scola. However, I would prefer to keep Goran and play him with Dwight and DWIll or trade him later for other parts that would fit around Dwight/DWill better.
