Morey should have come in and immediately gotten rid of T-Mac and Yao. Especially Yao. If he would have done so, we would be talking about the 1-4 seeds instead of hoping to make the 8th.

 

Morey has done a good job in building a team that can compete when the star player goes down and as a result we've been able to be in middle of the pack for past few years. However this is a double edge sword. While we are able to compete in short-term, we may be stuck with being mediocre for long term.

 

The percentage of wins generated from the top 3 players on a team is drastically reduced when at least 33% of those players is missing at all times during a given season.

That's why the win share has been spread a lot more evenly for the last decade or so - not because of the Rockets' decision makers.

Although, this year's numbers - and those moving forward - can probably be attributed to Morey's style of building a team.

The results of the Rockets are saying differently: Injury-resistent = failure.

 

So, in other words, the team has been built to sustain the always-predicted-never-wanted injuries to our top players (i.e. Yao and McGrady). I don't know if I see this as a positive thing or a negative thing because, quite frankly, you need a top player to compete for a championship. That's nothing new or Earth shattering and Morey knows that (since he's ready to rent Carmelo).

One of the negatives I see in building a team like this is that it will always be a team in limbo--too good to get a high lottery pick and not good enough to win it all. It's all about waiting on that ONE player that can bring this team to the promise land...but then you realize that you'd have to trade a couple or a few of these high WP players to get that ONE player.

losing their best player for a season was the best thing that ever happened to San Antonio, and whilst its rare to have a big fundamental in the draft, when said star comes back (if they do), you want to be best set up to prosper with his return, and for that, the team collapsing without him is ACTUALLY a good thing.

So the article is saying that the Rockets will never get a high draft pick, because the players are the end of the bench are too good.

 

Sorry if it's too obvious but, how come Battier and Lowry are ahead of Scola (the 2nd scorer and top rebounder is not top3 of the team)? How do they define how they 'produced' the victory? perhaps I'm too tired or read too fastly and it wasn't celar enough for me....

That article doesn't make sense to me. It basically said that when your 3 best players are relatively worse than other teams' 3 best players, or that your talent is spread out rather than concentrated in your stars, you don't lose as much productivity when your top 3 players get injured. Well, no shet Sherlock, but teams like this have no chance of winning championships either.

 

Formulas,stats and role players won't get the job done. This team is unbalanced,big decisions will have to be made.

 

It's true that the team is well constructed to survive injuries, and it's made them watchable through the last six years. But surviving injuries isn't the goal, winning titles is, and that doesn't happen without adding some elite pieces.

 

Point taken, but this type of thinking only looks at half of the sandwich.

On the flip side: this is indicative of how good our team could be if our #*$(&%(&#(*$(&$(&% star players would stay on the $(*$(&#(&@(&#$^ court. Not only could we have a steady top 3, but we could have a steady top 8. Our team was built for depth, and your post focuses on the downside of depth.

I'm not rambling towards you so much as a post-LeBron-Decision trend on Clutchfans, but... elite pieces earn their name for a reason... aka they're scarce. Hard to get. Wishful thinking. Lucky. Jackpot. One in a million. Cherry on top. Summit of the mountain.

It's sad that we had two of them and they both had their limbs replaced with glass. What are the chances of that?
