You can watch every dleague game on Futurecast online... there are a few games on TV... the next Vipers game on Versus is January 12th I believe.

Our team needs some athleticism, hustle, and toughness. Perhaps Stanley will prove to be a solution in this regard - assuming we can free up space on our roster. Regardless, it will be interesting to see his development.

On Sunday, former UConn player Stanley Robinson had 22 points and five rebounds for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBDL. He played so well, Jim Calhoun said, that the affiliated Houston Rockets were ready to call him up to the NBA.

"But afterward, his foot hurt and it turns out he has a staph infection," Calhoun said. "He'll be hospitalized for at least a week, probably won't play for 2-3 weeks. It's unfortunate, because he played so well."

Robinson played in the Valley Vipers' next game before going to the hospital, but could only last three minutes.

Robinson was drafted 59th overall (second to last) by the Magic in June, but was released during camp.

"He's too talented not to [make the NBA]," Calhouns aid. "We have had, and we have now, less talented players in the league."

Garrett Temple’s four-point effort on Tuesday was an anomaly.

His 16-point performance on Wednesday looked more familiar to Rio Grande Valley Vipers’ fans. The Vipers won both games over New Mexico, stretching their winning streak to three as they prepare to play at Reno for a back-to-back series beginning tonight.

Although he struggled on Tuesday, Temple hit a 3-pointer with less than two minutes remaining that gave the Vipers the lead for good in a 95-88 win. Earlier in the game, Finch got on Temple for passing up a 3-point shot. Instead, he pumped-faked and drove the basket and was called for a travel. Consider that a well received message. Temple didn’t hesitate when he knocked in what turned out to be the game-winning shot.

“In our offense, he can hit that shot,” Vipers coach Chris Finch said. “You need to play to your strengths. He didn’t then (when he passed up the three), but he did when it mattered and that was fine.”

Finch called Temple the consummate professional when he was signed last week after the San Antonio Spurs waived him. Temple played about half the season for the Vipers last season before he was called up by the Houston Rockets. From the Rockets he went to the Sacramento Kings and then the Spurs, where he finished the season and began this season.

“I was cut last year by the Rockets, I’ve been through it before,” Temple said. “I know it’s the business and guys like me who are on the brink of getting in (the NBA), that’s going to happen sometimes.”

The Vipers still owned the rights to Temple, who turned down an offer overseas, to return to the Valley. Basically, he said playing in the D-League gives him a better shot of returning to the NBA than going overseas.

FIGURING IT OUT:
The Vipers (4-3) are trying to figure out how to divvy up the minutes on a team that, on paper, seems to have more depth than the one that won the 2009-10 D-League championship.

Temple and Antonio Anderson have returned. Temple, a Vipers’ staple last season, hasn’t started in any of his four games this season. Anderson has six starts, but has been serving more as a role player than featured performer.

Houston Rockets assignee Patrick Patterson, a 6-9 power forward, leads the Vipers with 17.3 points and 9.6 rebounds. Point guard Mustafa Shakur, acquired this season in a trade with Tulsa, averaged 15.1 points and 3.9 assists.

Shooting guard Richard Roby, who led the Vipers with 31 points in their opener, has scored a combined 19 in his last three games. He’s only played 46 minutes in those games after playing 36 in the opener.

Forward Stanley Robinson, who came to the Vipers after he was waived by the Orlando Magic, has struggled to get playing time, averaging a little more than 10 minutes.

“We have a lot of pieces, and we are trying to figure it all out,” Finch said. “We have Stanley Robinson now, and we need to figure out how to get him in the mix.”
