The Decline of Pick-up Basketball

Most people in the summer around here only ball on outdoor courts in the late evening... Too hot to do anything in the day really...

 

FWIW,

I am from DC, but I spent the whole Summer in inner-city Chicago this past Summer. Every single pick up game I played was indoors at a neighborhood community center set up by Christian ministries. I would agree that its not dying, but just evolving to the hardwood/rubber(in some cases).

 

I play indoors 4-5 times a week. I dont think its died down basketball is the easiest game to get together with strangers. Theres just not pickup baseball games though that would be awesome............



Though random note I wish people would play with no 2/3pt line. Its sad I really think most players are more likely to make a 3 than a 10 ft shot. Watch people shooot around its all long distance and most games turn into a shooting contest and layups from people who dont comeback and play defense...I agree theres definitely a decline in the basics of the game. But its still popular

 

Southside. I spent a lot of time in Bronzeville (around 35th and state) and also spent a lot of time in Roseland
