My wife is from Sacramento and the main reason we're moving is to be close to her family in the area. And we'll be able to get a good price on a house in close to Sacramento since the housing market has cratered there.
Thanks rimrocker. Lots of good information. We'll also be making some trips to Oregon. I've got a good friend from college and a cousin in Portland.
Hmm, Sacto: * There is a brewery in Sacto called Brew It Up where you can make your own batch of beer, which you come back for later and they bottle it for you. * The River Cats are a minor league team (AA I think, maybe AAA) for the San Francisco Giants. * The American River is popular for lazy summer days of floating, though there are parts with some rafting as well IIRC. * Folsom Lake can be sailed upon. * Old Sacramento can be a fun day or half day to just wander around. * Six Flags Marine World is in Vallejo, which is nearby. Fun for the kiddies. They have rides as well as animal attractions. Tahoe area: * Squaw Valley Ski Resort hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960, and it very good but pricey. Sugar Bowl has more reasonable rates. Season passes are available at most of the resorts I think. * Lake Tahoe itself is beautiful, and for a few weeks a year it is warm and pleasant for water activities. * Donner Lake is less well known, and consequently less crowded. * Casinos are available on the Nevada side of the border in Lake Tahoe. Central Coast: * Pleasure Pizza in Capitola is a personal favorite of mine, though many will swear by Pizza My Heart available in Capitola and Santa Cruz. * Red is a good spot in Santa Cruz, but there are tons of bars all over. * The Palo Alto, a cement pleasure ship from the fifties, is worth a look in Aptos, though you can't walk out onto it any more. * The Monterey Bay Aquarium is very nice, on weekends you can go at night and they have food and wine. * Pebble Beach is one of the best golf courses in the world, and they charge accordingly. San Fran: * Way too much to list. Definitely go to Yosemite. Maybe the most beautiful place on earth. Meh, that is probably enough for now.
Most likely we'll be buying our house in Fair Oaks or Roseville. I think it's about 45 minutes to Yuba City. That's where my wife's grandfather lives.
Roseville is nice. My family is from the Linda, Marysville, and Yuba City area. Believe it or not... I miss that place. My grandfather lives there as well. I like how they redid Lincoln. That place has grown.
I've always wanted to visit alcatraz and take pics inside the cells while quoting lines from the birdman of alcatraz..Someday. On man v food, adam tackled Ike's place in San fran, said their sandwiches were legendary.
be sure to check out my favorite pizza place, pizza my heart. $5 for a t-shirt and a slice. i've actually been three times (each with someone who hadn't been) and it's great. the audio tour is very interesting.
