So we're flying out tomorrow,Baltimore to Sacramento. After more than 10 years on the east coast, I'm ready to make the move west. We'll be living just north of Sacramento. Lake Tahoe's about an hour and half away. The northern California coast (San Francisco/Santa Cruz) is about 3-4 hours. I've already started plotting all the surf/camp spots on the north/central coast. The plan is to get an old VW pop top camper van for surf excursions.

I'd love to hear people's recommendations for stuff to do/places to visit in the area. In particular, info on places to check out in San Francisco (restaurants, parks, events) would be much appreciated.

If you're a avid skier/snowboarder, living 1 1/2 hours away from Tahoe is awesome..

    I'm jealous. :(

I do snowboard and I've just started looking into the ski areas closest to where we'll be living.

I actually think you are a bit closer to both those regions than you think, particularly San Fran which is probably only 1.5-2 hours away from you. I recall making it from San Jose to Tahoe in Under 4 hours a few times. Sadly, despite living near great ski mountains, you will never get out there as much as you would hope to. I live only 1 hour 15 min from Vail, Keyston, Breck, A-Basin, etc. And I only found the time to head over there about 5 times last year.

We'll we're moving there. So it's not like we're going to be "away." We'll live and work in the area.

I went camping in Quincy in Plumas County, 1.5 hours West of Reno. The drive from Sacramento through the Feather River Canyon was one of the most beautiful and scenic road trips I've ever driven...

If you move all the way out to Sacramento, you might as well move to the Bay Area. The weather difference between SF and Sacramento is like light and day.

I'm just up the road in Medford, OR.

Feather River is a good call.

    Lassen is a necessity.

    Skiing at Mt. Shasta.

Lake Shasta and Whiskeytown are cool.

Lots of ocean-front camping in Redwoods NP.

Bodega Bay is nice, and we've enjoyed camping at Sonoma Beach SP.

Big Basin SP, just south of the San Fran area is primo Redwood camping/hiking.

    Yosemite and Sequoia, of course.

    Death Valley in February.

That'd be great. I'd love to meet both you guys. Let me know when you're headed west.

I will be spending a lot of time in Santa Cruz. Very high concentration of sweet surf spots.
