Not sure if this has been discussed before, but have any members of this BBS been in fraternities in college? (I'm sure many of you have) I'm going to UH this fall and it looks like I'll be joining one. I wouldn't mind getting some opinions on them from guys who aren't trying to recruit me by saying all the right things...

So what are the perks and drawbacks of it all? And did you enjoy yourself, was it worth it?

I was a GDI. Not a big fan of the others. Best way to join is to go to any frat's pledge event and ask some of the older brothers where the GDI's meet. Since it's the highest quality but least visible, just mentioning it should give you a great shot to join and introduce you to some of the GDI members.

Personally, I wasn't in a frat, but 2 of my 3 roommates last year were. One was in Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) and the other was a Delta Sig. ATO was so big, that you don't even know everyone in the frat, and his dad (legacy) was paying about $300/mo. for his dues. Also, you have a large initiation fee.

If you do join a frat, make sure you join the right one. Don't get duped into joining a crappy one just because the guys there seem nice. There's nothing worse apparently than being in a "piss-on" frat.

My frat was Tappa Kegga Bru.

I went through rush my Freshman year at UT, but after a couple of days, it turned into more of a party than "me trying to get into their club", so I just partied my a$$ off and forgot about trying to get into any one of the frats.

I joined Sigma Chi is college and it was a wonderful experience. I still get together with the guys and reminiss.

Joining a frat is a great experience and I would highly recommend it.

Sigma Chi is one of the best to join, I would also highly recommend it. I think UH has a very strong Sig chapter.

Which Delta Sig, because there is the Delta Sigma Pi, business frat, that actually is a co-ed frat, and there's Delta Sigma Phi, which is a regular frat (or do I have them mixed up?).

I was in one and its a great experience. 12 years later, I still keep in touch with many of the guys (in some cases, our kids are the same age and play together).

Rule #1...the 1st time I referred to the fraternity as a frat...one of the brothers (i was pledging at the time) yelled at me and asked if I called my country a c*nt.

It just seems to me that the frat guys I see everyday are stuck in High School. The fact that there's a lot of people pumping eachother's heads up leads some to act like they normally wouldn't. I would try and stay away from it, but that's just my biased, objective opinion. (yes I know that was an oxymoron.)

Never felt like I needed to buy my friends...

Don't like frat types, at least not at UT, what with their dirty hats, slacks, Jerry Jeff Walker t-shirts, and Ropers. Not my thing.

No offense to anyone who may be in one on this board of course...

I think a better idea would be to dress up like girl and join a sorority. It would be fun and really funny. Just watch out for that pesky house mother.:D

Guys,

All fraternities are is a social group of guys getting together to have a good time.

Not everyone in the frat is going to be a great friend, but you meet so many good ones that it is an incredible experience.

It helps you network for jobs later in life as well. As a Sigma Chi I have a built in support system for job searching, and the first 2 jobs I got out of college were directly related in that my contact for the jobs was made through my Sigma Chi brothers.

A great experience.

I think people that are on the outside do not really understand what fun it is to belong to a fraternity, they only see the exteriour of it, and the inside is so much more.

i would say that most of the people who are in fraternities or sororities never felt that way either...they joined because it's something their friends were already involved with.

I was in Delta Chi at UH. But we got closed down so I don't think that'll be an option for you :D . Good way to meet new people and become involved in a group/community set of events. Luckily it was my experience that I took the latitude to tell Active members to **** off if they tried to make me do something too gross or stupid or dangerous. Pushups in the mud? Yes. Eating some plate of crap with god knows what ingredients? **** off. (I had it on good word it included spit).

DD,
I totally understand the benefits, but I think that if Apollo Creed here is considering, he should weigh out the benefits alongside the drawbacks. If he is a person that has a history of following other people, he might run into some problems when he can't step in and say "No, I don't want to do this." But I also would enjoy the brotherhood that comes with being in a frat, it's just that I know they're not for me and some people.

DT,

They really do not ask you to do anything that is outrageous, at least ours didn't.

To each his own, all I will say, is that College was the best time of my life, and being in Sigma Chi was a big reason for that.

Farts. Well, there are various kind of farts.

The "Pull My Finger" or PMF: Everyone enjoys a good chuckle, and nothing produces one as consistenly as the classic "pull my finger" gag. Many a gullible child has set a PMF into motion by tugging on the digit of a father or favorite uncle. The PMF has the distinction of being the only fart which is employed strictly for comedic purposes.

The "Silent But Deadly" or SBD: This is perhaps the most dangerous of all farts. It's like the ninja of passed gas. Without any warning, the SBD's foul fumes quickly spread, creating panic and destruction in its deadly wake. The unknown origin of an SBD results in denials and accusations. Typically, the person who did it tries to blame it on the dog.

The Machine Gun: A rapid fire "rat-a-tat-tat" sound is created by gas bubbles cuasing the sphincter to open and close quickly, thus producing short, but numerous farts in quick succession. This fart is one of the largest gas (as well as laughter) producing types. The longest "machine gun" on record was achieved by Gus Forbin of Thunder Bay, Ontario from 1964-1967.

The Shock Wave: Trying to supress the release of intestinal gas can result in an intense pressure buildup, resulting in the shock wave...one long release of incredible power. The sonic wave generated by this particular fart can be heard for miles. There have also been reports of structural damage.

The "Big Wet One" or BWO: The human body is complex, mysterious, and often disgusting. When it vents gas, sometimes other things are expelled as well as wet stinky things. Accompanied with its distinct wet sound, nothing can empty a room, or fill your pants, as quickly as a BWO.

The Trumpet: One, or more often, a series of loud farts that vary in pitch or tone is what researchers call "The Trumpet". With practice and proper diet, simple musical compositions can be performed...preferably at an outdoor ampitheater.

The CarbonatorDecades before the invention of the hot tub, flatulent people in the bath were enjoying bubbles of their own making. And as to swimming pools--do you think that people who pee in the pool would even think twice about farting in it?

The Blowtorch: Mankind's fascination with farts has led to all kinds of experiments. The application of flame, usually from a cigarette lighter held near the body's "rear exhaust pipe", can ignite the expelled flammable methane gas.

The Oopsie-Daisy: Try as you might, sometimes you just can't help but bust a little wind...often at the most inappropriate times and places. The oopsie-daisy (also known as the "excuse me") most frequently occurs in the workplace, elevators, and fine restaurants...and it's usually followed by blushing and a sheepish grin.

The Amplified Commode Blow: Unless you've brought a periodical with you, sitting on the toilet can be a tiresome and uninspiring experience. A commode blow, however, will not only provide you with instant gratification, it will also produce a sound three times as loud as those made by conventional farts.

Beer Farts: Due to its effect on the digestive system and its carbonated nature, beer is usually listed among the top fart-producing substances. While beer farts do have plenty of unpleasant properties, other foods and drinks contribute to the possibility of flatulence as well. The N.F.I. (National Flatulence Institute) has been compiling a list of foods and drinks that help to contribute to "air pollution". Their findings? Apparently everything can make you fart, although beans have been officially classified as the "musical fruit".
