Should the Rockets go after David Lee in offseason?

The Bricks are going to use him in a sign and trade to get another player they covet.

That is all.

 

I don't see us being able to offer him more than the Knicks. Even the full MLE would be lowballing him.

I don't think Lee's a $10 million player.

 

Young 20-10 players don't usually like to sign to play backup minutes. It's not going to happen.

 

The only way we could get him is a sign and trade.

Base-year compensation rules come into play at that point (half of Lee's base-year salary, plus or minus whatever, maybe involving third team etc etc).

We might balk at helping New York in any way that would weaken the draft pick/s they owe us. Although I don't see the Knicks completely striking out in free agency, there's no guarantee they'll get LeBron or Wade or, in a year, Carmelo.

 

I don't see us keeping Scola AND signing Lee. It would be one or the other, because neither of those players would/should be coming off the bench. If I had to choose between the two I would take Scola. Even though his numbers aren't as good he already knows the system and is the hardest working player in the game IMO.

The reason I don't see this being worth it is the fact that he won't make us a top contender. We already have Scola and to give Lee a MLE would be pointless given we have that position filled pretty strong. Need a finisher, not just another great role player.

 

This. Don't even bring Lee up as an alternative. The Rockets can't afford to sign him outright; and there's no way the Knicks agree to take back salary from Houston in a Lee sign-and-trade.

Not necessarily. While using Lee in a sign-and-trade is a definite avenue available to New York this summer, the Knicks won't take back ANY salary until they have squared away whether they'll be able to, in fact, add two max free agents. Otherwise, a Lee sign-and-trade for anything more than a future pick could scuttle their plans.

Unfortunately for New York, if Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Johnson take too long to make up their minds, David Lee could end up bolting for a team like Minnesota, OKC, the Clippers or the Nets for a huge payday. Sure, he'd make less than he could in a sign-and-trade from New York, but is he willing to risk losing out on big money elsewhere if the Knicks eventually just renounce him in favor of two max guys?

It is entirely possible (although Donnie Walsh will do everything in his power to avoid this situation) that the "two max guys" decision won't be made in time to stop Lee from bolting New York. Then, the Knicks could conceivably be left with nothing. Who knows? Maybe even Gay and Boozer sign elsewhere before the "two max guys" situation is squared away.

This, as well. Despite the fact that the Rockets CANNOT get Lee this summer under any feasible circumstances, even if they could, they would have to overpay for him. Lee has put up ungodly numbers in a D'Antoni offense that inflates players' stats. Sure, he's a good young player. Very talented. But $10 million per year talented? Not quite.

 

Well, maybe, maybe not.

For whichever team would sign and trade for Lee (it won't be the Rockets), as long as the FIRST season of Lee's deal is $8.4M or less (which is 120% of his 2009-10 salary), there will be no Base Year Compensation issues. And for a long-term deal, you could average it out to about $10M per while still avoiding the BYC issues.

 

Actually for cap reasons he will be shown on the NY Knicks 2010 hard cap for about 10 mill even though he'll be a free agent. So.... maybe?

Agreed with what others said. Good player, can't see the Rockets getting him under the salary circumstances. But if they do, I'd be pretty happy. He has a Scola-like game, except (a) he can jump and (b) he can use both hands (i.e. he is amphibious).

An atheletic and amphibious Scola would be great.

 

I knew he could use both hands but I didn't know he could live under water also.

 

He might be ambidextrous but he still doesn't have Scola's offensive game.

He is slighly better rebounder though and more athletic but I still would rather have Scola since the prizetag should be about the same.

However there likely is zero chance we are getting him, might as well dream about Bosh or Lebron.
