His name is Doug and he is a little shy.

Do I really have to go buy one of those damn mouse traps like Tom & Jerry, or is there a more humane way to trap Doug and set him free?

    Thanks in advance.

Hmm...in Germany, they sell these mouse traps where they run in and then they cannot get out anymore. I'm pretty sure you can get them over there as well. With those, you can catch them and set them free. But don't put it there if you are planning to leave the house for a few days...we once forgot about it and that was much meaner because the poor mouse starved to death.

Well I did a search and I found a link to a picture of a live mouse trap...

To deal with a flood of mice in the British Parliament, a motion was introduced in June "to invest in a House of Commons cat to try to tackle this problem."[Associated Press, 6-11-02]

Well, funny story, my dad and I once released a mouse far away from our house and of course we got stuck with the car in mud in the middle of the forest and had to walk about a mile through pouring rain to the next farm, all because of a damn mouse . Now that I think about it, why don't you get this trap here:

Get a bucket and fill it a half foot deep with soapy water. Stretch a large piece of paper across the top and fasten it taut like a drum. Cut an X in the center of the paper. Then, hang an enticing morsel over the X. Provide a ramp to get to the top of the bucket. The mouse will come and test the paper and find that it is secure and safe to walk on. Little does he know, it is a bit less safe at the center.... (I suppose you could do the same thing, except without the soapy water if you wanted to avoid killing him).

I had a mouse once that I set a standard trap out for. One evening, it snapped and I ran to go see if I got him. I had, but it had only pinned his hindquarters and he was still alive. Moreover, he had used his free front paws to retreat under the refrigerator. I didn't know what to do, so I called my father. He told me to whack with a broom handle. I was young and, frankly, didn't have the stomach for it -- though I should have. I had to have my wife lean the refrigerator back and sweep the guy out from underneath. But, as I tried to sweep him forward, he'd try to scramble away with his front paws. After many long minutes, I finally got him in a bag and I tossed him. So, he probably bled to death or something. I wish I had just bashed his skull. Later, I got his friend in the same sort of trap, but it killed him instantly. I then duct-taped the underside of my bottom cabinets and never had another problem.

Mice may be cute, but they reproduce.

Poison makes them die in your walls and they rot. It smells.
    Snap traps are horrific.
Humane traps are mostly worthless....or maybe I had smart mice.

They werent smart enough to stay away from the sticky trap.

Now my goldfish crackers are safe again!!!

    Except for those roaches

I was at my girlfriends sisters place a few weeks back and was on the phone. I heard my name being screamed out, only to find that the sister had caught the mouse in a trap in the roof of the dogs kennel. She just didn't have the stomach to touch the trap with a dead mouse in it. So I had to get rid of it.

That's my contribution to this thread.....

Am I the only one that has a fear of rodents?

I'm a grown man, and a pretty big one at that, but when I see rodents, I just freeze.

Don't get me wrong, if I was walking down an alley one night, and a rat jumps out at me, and we have to throw down, I'm all for it. But I guess it's the fact that they are so mysterious and creepy. They run around in sewers, they are dirty, they hang around other rodents, they carry diseases, plus I'm sure they'd be really slimy and warm to the touch. I freak out worrying about waking up one night with one crawling on my chest and face.

When I was growing up in Chicago, I walked into our garage to find a 3ft long possum gnarling his teeth at me. Damn, I still get goose bumps thinking of that. I think that did me in for life.

About a yr ago, coming home from the movies, I saw this lump of dirt start moving around. I looked closer and this thing looked like it had a rat tail and rat body, but the head of a beaver, and teeth of Freddy Kreuger!! After some research, I discovered that I had been introduced to the nutria. The rodents of all rodents.

we had a dead mouse in our first house... we couldn't find it, my wife was ready to knock a hole in the wall looking for the little guy... i proceeded to look harder and found him under the fridge right in front of the vent grill on the floor! I'm glad i found him cause we would've had several holes in the wall!! I told the wife to just let "nature take its course" but she wasn't having any of that! she was actually ready to go to a hotel!!

same problem in our second house... she could smell a dead something and it was really bugging her... fortunately this dead mouse was right under the house in a very accessible area!

i dread the day when i can't find it!!

When I built my first house, it was in the middle of a grapefruit orchard with about 90 trees. I was the first to build in that area, and didn't realize the problem I was in for...The house was ready in the dead of winter, and all those cold little field mice were getting into my garage somehow. Then I could here them in the attic. It drove me nuts. I bought the plastic traps from Target and put peanut butter on them to catch the little buggers. At the end of the trapping season, I netted over 35 critters. I've also dealt with possums and rats, but not at my first house.

My mom has a lot of cats, and one day I was helping her clean out her garage when I noticed a grey cat out of the corner of my eye. I asked my mom when she got a grey cat...she said she didn't. Upon further inspection if was a possum. Ugly piece of crap. Well, I didn't kill it. I just tossed it over the fence(into a cotton field).

Well I had something in my house that was bigger than a mouse: a possum. It is actually a funny story too. First we tried rat poison. Nothing. One night my dad managed to pick it up and throw it outside. But still it came back. Another night he got it again. He went outside with it and came back. I asked him if he threw it away again, and he said no. I asked what happend and he told me to look outside. There in our yard was out hedgeclippers stuck in the body of the possum. My mom freaked when she got up that morning. Well, now we don't have any possums! :)

...Now that I read this, I'd like to add a little to my mouse story. One day, my older brother and I came in from playing a little paintball tag in the orchard. We were dirty, so we came in through the garage. When we opened the door, we saw a few mice scurry along the wall...needless to say, paintball guns in hand, we had a little target practice...I'm not to proud of it, but when brothers get together, things do tend to get a little crazy.

wtf!!!?? that's weird. Wouldn't it bite him or something? Those things are bigger than cats sometimes.

I used to live with rats in my trailor. yippee.

He had on gloves, I think. Maybe a towel. Still, I don't think I would do that anyway.

I think it is time for Doug to die. Are they afraid of lights, because I am leaving mine on in the kitchen all freaking night long.

Doug is no longer a friend.

    IM FREAKING OUT!

A long time ago, I used a trap that uses some sort of goo that makes the mouse stick to it. Probably like a giant roach motel. The trap caught the mouse almost immediately but I couldn't kill it either so I just threw it away. I'll never use that trap again but luckily, I never had another mouse.

My wife works for a pharmaceutical company. All these traps are much more humane than what they do to the animals. :(
