    [Hangout Intended] Gmail question

Okay, the short story is that I am required to use the Gmail web interface for all my work email. Fine. (I know it works with clients, but I have to use a multitude of different machines, and travel for work, etc, so a machine-based email client won't do the job.)

Gmail is okay, but one of my several main gripes, the most important is that I can't tell, (in a simple, quick glance kind of way) what messages I've replied to and what messages I haven't replied to yet. That's pretty flipping important, no?

So you get a gray overlay for messages you've read, and if you've replied, there will be a "me" in the (awkward) list of people, but that might just meant you replied a few days ago to an earlier message... not the more recent one.

All other email systems I've used make it really clear (with a little arrow symbol, for instance) when you've replied.

So, basically, tech wizards and young-uns out there, HELP. I know there are mods you can add to Gmail, especially in firefox or something. I'm open to all suggestions, including if I'm missing something easy in settings.

Also, feel free to share other Gmail gripes. (e.g. listing everyone by their first name, as I have like 6 "Brian"s at work, from students to profs to staff and contractors... just stupid.)

EDIT: LOL, wrong forum. maybe my use of Gmail can be compared to waterboarding. Ugh. Double fail. Please move to hangout if possible.

I have no advice for ya Bobby, sorry. I'm a yahoo mail person myself.

Perhaps you should upgrade your baud modem.

Do you use the star feature right now? If not, you could always just star any emails you read and need to reply to, but haven't yet. Not an elegant solution, but at least it would help you keep track of things.

Yeah, I thought of that. And by "not elegant" we mean time consuming. I just think G mail is the suck.

I also find myself sometimes sifting through a big steaming pile (or "conversations" I believe, in the parlance) to look for one critical email with the right link or ftp site or something.)

since gmail organizes mail as conversations, if the last response in a conversation view is from someone other than yourself, then you have not responded to that email.

however, there's probably a way to do this w/ labels: create a label called "not responded to" or some such, then when you want to save a message to respond to later, simply apply that label to it. selecting the label in the label view will then show you all the emails you have not responded to. you'd want to be sure to remove the label as you respond.

as for your "Brian" problem, there's google labs feature called "got the wrong bob?" that might work for you.

Thank you, basso. I'll pursue the label solution I believe.

And Cheetah, I have asked you several times in the past to respect my privacy and not post actual photos of me here. I will report this to the mods. :(

That photo was taken outside of Tookie's in the mid-80's and as such is public domain.

Fair enough. At least it shows me in younger, happier times.

I don't use Gmail but if it works like every other email system couldn't you just check your sent mail box to see what emails you replied to?

Oh great. I'm now forever going to associate this strangely pleased-with-himself man with B-Bob.
