Rockets first sports franchise to use Excelyte

The Houston Rockets franchise has signed an agreement to use Excelyte, a new class of microbiocide disinfectant, in its locker-room areas.

The National Basketball Association team is the first pro sports team to try out the product.

Excelyte is a so-called “green” alternative to traditional chemical disinfectants, and has received Environmental Protection Agency approval to combat the bacteria that causes staph infections, as well as influenza, E. coli and other microorganisms.

Bob Schranz, a Rockets spokesman, said the product will be used as a topical solution for locker-room training tables and common areas such as whirlpools, showers and bathrooms. Specifically, he said the team was most impressed with the product’s ability to eliminate the risk of staph infections, the top concern among sports teams.

Negotiations began long before the nation’s swine flu outbreak, he said, but the product could be used to wipe down public areas if a sustained outbreak occurred.

Excelyte, which is biodegradable, is produced by channeling a solution of salt and water through an electrolytic cell while electronic current is applied to ensure that it is chemically neutral and safe for the environment. No side effects result from human contact with the solution.

Keith Jones, the team’s senior vice president of basketball operations and athletic trainer, said the team was looking for a product that would do its job but also help protect the environment.

Excelyte is produced by Integrated Environmental Technologies Ltd. (OTCBB: IEVM), based in Little River, S.C.

Houston-based Benchmark Performance Group made a $3 million investment in IET in 2007, and also became exclusive distributor for its EcaFlo fluids to the oil and gas industry.
