where is the cheapest place online to get it? Ive found one for 15.00 to register and 40.00 a yr to host it. Are there other places cheaper?
I just built a site at www.BlueBoxInternet.com in the ballpark of what you've been quoted. They made it simple for me, a web-illiterate, to get a pretty nice site up. Someone here had recommended them before.
there are tons of deals to be had out there for hosting and domain registration. I just re-registered my domain for like $15 for the year. My hosting is $10 a month. But you can find all sorts of deals. Just do a search for cheap domain names, cheap web hosting or something along those lines. You can also search this BBS as we have discussed this a couple of times...
re: servers, you get what you pay for. i cannot stress that enough. if it's cheap, be suspicious, do research; there are too many fly-by-night servers that are here today, gone tomorrow. it may not cost much, but you cannot put a price on having to deal with a problematic server. just trust me. check out ventures online. they have packages as low as $8/month and come highly recommended. we just switched to them and have been, thus far, pleased with their service. easy set-up, too.
It isn't hard to find inexpensive hosting on Linux boxes but it is not easy to find good Win hosting. If you want to use ASP or Cold Fusion and if you want SQL (not MySQL), it is TOUGH. I've used http://www.1planhost.com/ in the past. At $100 ($25 extra for SQL server) per year, they are solid but their SQL connections aren't terribly fast. ClutchCity.net is now on VortechHosting.com and they are amazing from just about every angle - customer support is blazing fast as are the servers. Problem is that Vortech's decent Win hosting is $70 per month. Another good one if you can afford them is Intermedia.net. They are a TREMENDOUS company but $100+ per month. If you can afford a server box or have some friends willing to go in on one together, that's the best way to do it, but even then, you are likely stuck with Linux meaning no ASP, Cold Fusion or MSSql which is a bummer if you are comfortable in those environments because Win dedicated hosting is almost always really expensive.
I see Ric's point but I do know of Blue Box Internet and they are a good company. I know people who host with them and like the service they get.
