In my search for the perfect neighborhood, I came across one called Southwood, just south of Texas State University. The main drag through it seems to be Southmore. I had never seen it before and was surprised to find it. It has got some character and I'm trying to learn more about it. I already know what I can learn about the statistics and other things I can find on the web. And, I'll be doing more tours of it in the near future. I'm wondering if we have any posters who live or have lived there or are otherwise familiar with it. What do you think of it? What is it like living there? What are the people like there? What are the businesses and stores like? What is annoying about it? What is cool about it? etc.
http://www.westurealestate.com/demographicsWESTBURY.htm sounds like it's in Westbury. Check the previous housing thread... I don't remember who posted it, but it had info on Westbury... btw, http://www.google.com or any other search engine can help you find info on just about anything... When questions like this are posed, I go to google first. I realize you may be looking for personal experiences from BBS'ers who know about Southwood, etc... I just thought I would throw out the google info for those who may need answers in the future.
There's a reason you can live that close to downtown and not have to pay an arm and a leg. http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/departme/police/dec0110h60.htm http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/departme/police/jan0210h60.htm I just spent the last four months searching for the perfect place to live in Houston (I gave up, by the way). You might want to check out Idylwood or Eastwood if you like Southwood. They don't seem to be as.....well.....scary. They're on the other side of 45 though, so you won't be as close to the museums.
Southwood, which SE of downtown, is a different area from Southwood Courts, in Westbury. This is just to continue Houston's proud tradition of making some areas or streets share a name with 10 others, while making other areas or streets go by 10 names all its own. Pole, thanks for the links. I appreciate what previous neighborhood hunters have to tell me. But, I'm not sure if the crime rosters actually tell me all that much. Nor do I think I'm all that worried about them. I lived 7 years in a high-crime neighborhood in Chicago before coming to Houston and loved it nevertheless. Of course, I don't want to get me or my wife killed, but it's a calculated risk I will take if I get reasonable enough odds. I'll look at Eastwood and Idylwood. I haven't visited either area. As rH guessed, what I'd really like is some anecdotal evidence from people who have actually lived/worked in the area? Or does no one from that area root for the Rockets?
In fact, looking at my current area (Westheimer/Gessner), I don't know if I'm in a better area. My car is certainly in more danger! http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/departme/police/jan0218g40.htm
I'm assuming he's talking about Texas Southern. He's from Chicago, probably a deluded Cubs fan, so give him a break.
OK, I thought maybe he was talking about the school whose mascot is the Armadillo and had Kathy Ireland kicking field goals for their football team.
I was sure this thread was going to be a follow up to Houstone's "morning wood" topic a couple of weeks ago.
1. If anything, I'm a fan of the White Sox, not the Cubs. 2. I'm no Yankee. I grew up in Houston. 3. I mistyped it is all. Once I hit the S I just took a left turn. 4. Thanks for setting these folks straight. I'd hate for deepellum to start telling me about neighborhoods in Waco or whatever.
