I thought this was pretty cool: http://walkscore.com/

It maps how walkable your neighborhood is by nearby amenities. One of the things I love about living in Seattle (Fremont neighborhood) is how walkable it is. It scored a 74. Of course, my feet are all busted up right now so I pretty much can't take advantage. As long as I'm healed in time to pick blackberries, I'll be all right...

My neighborhood is safe. Mostly deer that roam around at night. I can walk around at 4 in the morning and not have a single car pass by. It's very quiet and safe.

EDIT: It meant to get to a destination. It's only a 3. I thought it meant safety in walking through your neighborhood even at odd hours.

89 out of 100 in Houston.

and with my car sitting in my garage for the past 3 weeks waiting for a new tire to be delivered from the Goodyear plant - i actually have been doing NOTHING BUT WALKING - and actually enjoying not being car dependent...

of course to go outside of my neighborhood - i am relying on my buddies to pick me up - which sucks.

20 out of 100. Port Arthur suburbs. Yep, that's about what I expected. I can walk to the grocery store, coffee house, or fast food. Not much else.
