I worked my way through Rice at Kahn's. Mike tried for years to get me to buy it...not at his price. lol. Good for him, though. He got what he wanted; persistence pays off.

Apparently the new owners want to keep everything the same.

Has anyone been there lately? Did you notice anything differently. Someone go get a "Small, combo reuben" for me and report back. please.

I have never heard of this place. I'm heading to B4-U-Eat.com right now, but feel free to tell me about the place.

nothing ever has or ever will beat his father's place...Alfred's. That was what a deli should be. Kahn's is very good, too, but in a different, corner deli kind of way.

Kahn's is the best deli in Texas...by FAR.

I hope it doesn't change. I get a reuben every time I visit Houston.

I went by two weeks ago and it looked like they were remodeling it.

That's cool, HP, i did not know you worked there, used to go there all the time and get a reuben and orangina.

Mike is awesome, Alfred was awesome, rice deli's not-named-jasons are awesome.

You've obviously never been to Kenny & Ziggy's. It blows Alfred's away.

    BTW...Kahn's is not a deli. It's a sandwich shop.

If you like to eat $16 sandwiches then it Kenny & Ziggy's is great. The food was very good but WAY overpriced IMO.

Makes sense they were remodeling. they can definitely make better use of the space. They'll be making a big mistake if they don't continue using the pizza oven for toasting the reuben's, though. That's the whole key.

ha. i probably made one of those reuben's for you.

I'm pretty sure you don't mean that. Not the Rice Blvd Alfred's. I mean, they aren't really comparable because they are different eras. Houston can't really sustain a real jewish deli anymore like Alfred's.

btw: the defunct Yakov's deli (a Russian deli) on Richmond was outstanding, too. Anyone remember that?

HeyP...Alfred's was not a "real Jewish deli". Not by a longshot. K&Z's comes much closer to the real thing than Alfred's ever did.

I don't know. I have eaten there once and was not impressed by the sandwich for the price I paid. i mean it was close to 9 bucks.

You can get a quality sandwich from the down town specs for that much as well as chips and a soda.

That's funny, I worked at Kahn's when I was in high school. in the mid '80s. Mike was a nice guy, but the pay was for sh_t. I had to move over to Cut Flowers next door.

Well, that means we worked together. I started as gopher on Fri/Saturdays then worked the board fulltime later. I think my first year was '85.

As for pay, don't forget the free food. I took major advantage of that. One time I asked for a raise and Marcia said they could do it. I said, "yes you can, raise the price of the reuben. It's been the same price for 5 yrs." The next day I got my raise and the price changed. haha. don't get mad at me.

I went there once because I heard it was great. I was very good, but the price to food ratio was a little higher than I like to pay.

Yummy.........I love a good sandwich. From Banh mi to Antone's, a good deli Rueben to a French Dip, and lots of others in between, sandwiches are the best. Hell, I can even find something I like at Subway.

It used to be that one of the highlights of any trip to NYC would be to go to a real NY deli................but after I went to Schwartz's Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen, everything else just kind of pales in comparison. Ohhh that taste!
