Here are the numbers for January so far and all are per game: Eddie Griffin:…... 33 min, 57% f/g%, 15.8 pts, 3.6 blks, 7.4 rebs Pau Gasol:……… 39 min, 50% f/g%, 17.5 pts, 4.1 blks, 9 rebs Shane Battier:…... 43 min, 35% f/g%, 14.8 pts, 1.5 blks, 1.3 stls, 5.8 rebs Jamaal Tinsley:…. 32 min, 33% f/g%, 11.2 pts, 2 stls, 1.2 blks, 4.4 rebs, 9.4 assists Jason Richardson:. 33 min, 38 % f/g%, 13.4 pts, 2.4 rebs, 2.6 assists Tony Parker:……. 26 min, 38 % f/g%, 8.7 pts, 2.1 rebs, 2.8 assists Out of this group Eddie Griffin is the youngest followed by Tony Parker, both will turn 20 in May. Jason Richardson is next turning 21 this month followed by Pau Gasol who turns 22 over the summer. Shane Battier and Jamaal Tinsley both turn 24 this year with Tinsley as the oldest. It looks to me like Gasol and Griffin are almost neck and neck. Gasol has slightly better numbers with 6 more minutes of play per game but Eddie is shooting almost 60 percent from the field, which is easily, the best among the rookies. Tinsley’s numbers also put him in contention but his f/g% is so low that it may hurt him. The one thing that Tinsley can hang his hat on for this month is that he badly out played Steve Francis earlier this month also getting a game winning steal against him. Shane Battier is really the only other rookie that seems to be close to Eddie, Gasol or Tinsley but I think his numbers are just not good enough considering the number of minutes per game he plays and his f/g%. The rest of the rookie class is just too far behind to even be considered. My feeling is that there is no way the NBA will name Eddie Griffin rookie of the month unless his numbers are just so superior to the rest of the rookie class that they have no choice. The NBA hates to admit that they are wrong and by naming Eddie as the rookie of the month would be the same as admitting they made a mistake when choosing the all-star week-end rookie team. Personally I feel that given Eddies shooting percentage and the fact that he has earned almost all of his stats coming off of the bench this month with fewer minutes that he should get it. Of course I am not biased. Realistically speaking I think this is a two-man race between Tinsley and Gasol. Gasol I think will get it based on his numbers but Tinsley will be close based on his performance against Steve and his numbers.
it is a G-damned crime that eddie will not be in the rookie all-star game!!!! and what about oscar; has he fallen off the planet?
I think Oscar has not only hit a wall but he got out of sync when Cat came back and he went back to the bench.
Wow , Gasol is blocking machine as well! I think you have to Give it to Griff even though Gasol's numbers are a little better , Gasol already has gotten ROM anyways
I tabulated Griffin's numbers over his last 10 games (the breakout Laker game): Over the past 10 games, the Rockets are 5-5. Griffin averages: 35.7 MPG 16.6 ppg 9.2 rpg (2.8 off. rpg) 3.4 bpg .7 apg 1.4 tpg 2.5 PF pg 20-45 3P, 44.4% 65-129 FG, 50.4% (53.6% on 2 point FG) 16-22 FT, 72.7% I guess those are okay numbers. Some other notes: Griffin has moved into the top 10 in blocks per 48 minutes, and is just outside the top 20 in blocks per game. He also has just put his FG% over 40%, pretty good, considering it was in the 20s earlier in the year. Griffin happens to be averaging more points, more rebounds, and more blocks than Zelko Rebraca, who made the rookie game over Griff. Rebraca is 7 years older than Griffin. Doesn't the NBA usually name 2 ROMs?
Regarding Rookie of the Month and Rookie of the Year honors - who chooses the rookie of the month? Gasol looks more deserving on paper. I think the NBA will market Gasol much much more because it's trying to push the NBA into European markets. Whether that has any effect on voting, who knows? Anyways, the voters have picked some guys who disappeared in the past, so don't sweat it, BUT most of the winners have turned out to be superstars as long as they were healthy. http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/basketball/nba/history/rookie.htm What happened to these guys? 1978-79 Phil Ford Kansas City = now coach at UNC 1973-74 Ernie DiGregorio Buffalo - hurt knee in second season, pretty short career.
A good question. The way I understood it was that a ROM was chosen for each conference. That would still leave Griffin hung out to dry.
Phil Ford is no longer a coach at UNC - Matt Doherty cleaned house when he came in coaching wise. As far as the NBA naming two ROM's, I don't think they do, because they named Shane Battier ROM for December and I do not recall another rookie being chosen for the Eastern Conference.
Yep, it's just one Rookie of the Month. Occasionally they have done two, like I remember the 1st month of the 99-00 season, Adrian Griffin and I think Lamar Odom ended up getting co-ROM, but otherwise it's just 1, like in Duncan's rookie season where he was the only Rookie of the Month every month of the season.
