When I start my computer up it warns me that the hard drive could crash soon. Windows Vista (yeah i know) also pops up with a simlar warning every few minutes. What's the deal?

Means you'd probably better prepare for hard drive failure. Start backing up your stuff. I'd probably get a new hard drive and re-load the OS and use that old hard drive as a storage drive.

How did [or DOES] your machine warn you that your hard drive would be failing? Was there a DOS-style message on a blank screen, did it have colors, was it in WINDOWS, or how? I am curious because I have VISTA on a laptop and am thinking about upgrading XP.

Sorry to hijack SCF's thread, but... what does it mean when WorstBuy has replaced a hard drive that continued to freeze, TWICE no less, and now says

    "Hard Disk Failure
    Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

    ??

I have never seen a message like that before. Did they just start that with Vista? I have received a warning on my laptop (Windows XP) that my battery is not going to last much longer and I just got that 1 year ago from Dell.

    Hard Drive Failure?

Back stuff up now. It's probably inevitable. It's happened to me 2-3 times, and I don't sweat it because I have most of my stuff archived. Do you happen to hear any clicking when your computer is running btw?

my western digital hard drives have usually failed after three to four years of usage.

after a few bad hard drives (new wd) i am giving my business to seagate. i even went as far as purchasing a seagate server hard drive for my personal computer in hopes that it'll last longer than my previous western digitals.

All my hd failures have been WD too. I'm also looking at Seagates for HD upgrades. The seem to have the best reputation for reliability right now. Anyone else w/ experience?

    alright guys,

Thanks for your help. I dont really have that much stuff on my computer that is very important, so I'll just backup my notes from class and a couple of other programs. This really sucks. I've never hard a hard drive fail on my computer and the computer is only about 6 or 8 months old...:( I'm essentially waiting on the inevitable I take it? Am I going to have to send in the computer to the manufacturer and wait several weeks to get a working unit sent back to me?

I have three Seagate drives right now (1 external, 2 internal) and they all work great. Great warranty as well.
