I'm thinking of visiting Russia in March...For those who have been, it will be my first visit to the country, so I was wondering which city you would recommend for a first-time visitor -- Moscow or St. Peterburg?

Both are amazing places. Moscow has better nightlife but St. Petersburg has some cool sightseeing options like the Hermitage Museum, Peterhof, and some other cool cathedrals. When I went to Russia, we took the train up to St. Petersburg from Moscow.

Thanks for the info...I think we're leaning towards Moscow right now, just because we have limited time and it's our first time visiting the country. How long does it take the get a Russian tourist visa, and how much does it cost?

I bet it'll still be really cold in March, but it can't be too much worse than it is here in Chicago...

Haven't been there, but it probably can be much worse.

Ehh, I just checked the average temperature for Moscow in March and it's 36 high, 23 low...the average temps here in Chicago right now is 31 high, 18 low + wind. I think I'll be alright...

The Russian tourist visa is expensive and a little tricky. From what I recall, you need your hotel to sponsor you if you're not a student. There's plenty to see in Moscow, so you'll be fine. The clubs are amazing, just be careful if you try to hook up with someone. There's a lot of organized crime in the city, so don't leave your groiup and head off in a car to some strange chick's place.

In addition to the standard stuff like the Kremlin, Red Square, and Lenin's tomb, try to check out some of the parks, old Soviet landmarks, and some of the performing arts stuff.
