I got this idea from another board, and thought it might be pretty cool to try here. If college football were to have a 16 team playoff, when would you schedule it? What bowls would you use? Who do you think would win? Anyway, what I wanted to do was have something like a clutchcity.net challenge for a playoff system, much like I conducted a one on one tournament challenge for basketball. If everyone would post their picks for the first round only below like I am, I'll be happy to find the consensus winner (by poll) and then move on to the next round. As of right now, here is the top 16 of the BCS: 1. Miami 2. Tennessee 3. Nebraska 4. Colorado 5. Oregon 6. Florida 7. Texas 8. Illinois 9. Stanford 10. Maryland 11. Oklahoma 12. BYU 13. Washington St. 14. Washington 15. South Carolina 16. Syracuse Weekend 1 Dec. 22-23 Holiday Bowl (1) Miami vs. (16) Syracuse Rematch of two weeks ago in Miami. Syracuse could do better on the road, but not much. Miami 45, Syracuse 14 Peach Bowl (2) Tennessee vs. (15) South Carolina If Tennessee could beat Florida in the Swamp, they can find a way to beat the Gamecocks. However, they aren't as offensively dominating as Florida, and Lou Holtz has a good record in big games, so it might be relatively close. Tennessee 31, South Carolina 21 Gator Bowl (3) Nebraska vs. (14) Washington I don't like Nebraska that much, but Washington has looked absolutely pitiful at times this season. Nebraska 38, Washington 17 Alamo Bowl (4) Colorado vs. (13) Washington St. Washington St. might could give Colorado a game. They did pretty well stopping Deshaun Foster earlier this season, when he was on a major roll. Still, CU would be a little too much, imho. Colorado 27, Washington St. 23 Insight.com Bowl (5) Oregon vs. (12) BYU Most intriguing game of all; undefeated BYU goes up against a real opponent. I think if they did, they'd lose by a pretty decent margin. They had trouble beating Mississippi St. the other night, actually. Oregon 45, BYU 24 Seattle Bowl (6) Florida vs. (11) Oklahoma Classic matchup: Spurrier vs. Stoops. While OU's defense is exceptional, it hurts having no offense. Florida 17, Oklahoma 10 Cotton Bowl (7) Texas vs. (10) Maryland Here's assuming Simms starts, and Major comes in at the sign of any mental mistakes remotely similar to the Big XII championship. Maryland had trouble defending the pass against Florida St, so I don't think Texas would have too many problems. Texas 38, Maryland 10 Sun Bowl (8) Illinois vs. (9) Stanford Illinois may be the champion of a weak Big 10, but Stanford has beaten some very quality teams this year, including a win at Oregon. Illinois might hold it close, but Stanford would pull it out in the end. Stanford 19, Illinois 14 If you guys want to do this, post some picks below...
it's december madness, baby!!! 1/16: MIAMI over syracuse [a walk] 2/15: SOUTH CAROLINA over tennessee [holtz pulls the upset] 3/14: NEBRASKA over washington [another walk] 4/13: COLORADO over washington st. [another walk] 5/12: OREGON over byu [a blowout] 6/11: FLORIDA over oklahoma [not that close] 7/10: TEXAS over maryland [as long as Major's playing] 8/9: STANFORD over illinois [the smart kids win] the whole prospect is almost too wonderful to even consider. would there be any possible way to watch all 8 games?
chievous-ya there prob would be some way. Spread it out over 2 days. And you'd have a schedule of... Game #1-11:00 AM Game #2-2:00 PM Game #3-5:00 PM Game #4-8:00 PM Sure, the end of 1 game would overlap the start of another one for about 10-20 mins, but it's worth it. I don't think an 11 AM start is that bad if it's played in the East Coast. And the 8:00 pm start isn't too late for a West or Midwestern team.
but could you do that without bumping into the nfl? could you maybe do two evening doubleheaders if the late game was on the west coast on thursday and friday, then have the quadrupleheader on saturday? you'd only have to do it that first weekend. geez, can you even imagine the hype?
NFL? Who cares about the NFL? Personally, I'd love to see the NCAA kill the NFL in ratings. But, you brought up a valid point, and I guess they'd have Fri-Sat games rather than Sat-Sun games. The NCAA playoff games would be 3209832409834 times more interesting to watch than some lousy regular season NFL game. The NFL sucks and is no better than the XFL!
Have a playoff in college football? What a novel concept, too bad that it will never happen. Oh well, here's my picks: Miami 42, Syracuse 10 Tennessee 24, South Carolina 21 (OT) Nebraska 31, Washington 14 Colorado 28, Washington State 24 Oregon 41, BYU 20 Florida 27, Oklahoma 10 Texas 22, Maryland 7 Illinois 30, Stanford 27
Miami over Syracuse Tennesseee over South Carolina Nebraska over Washington Colorad over Wash St. BYU over Oregon (both have lots of offense, no defense...its a shootout that BYU pulls out in the last second.) Oklahoma over Florida Texas over Maryland Illinois over STanford
Miami Tennessee Nebraska Colorado Oregon Florida Texas (close if with Simms, blowout if with Major) Illinois
(1) Miami vs. (16) Syracuse Miami (2) Tennessee vs. (15) South Carolina South Carolina (3) Nebraska vs. (14) Washington Nebraska (4) Colorado vs. (13) Washington St. Colorado (5) Oregon vs. (12) BYU Oregon (6) Florida vs. (11) Oklahoma Oklahoma (7) Texas vs. (10) Maryland Texas (8) Illinois vs. (9) Stanford Illinois
Illinois and Stanford are deadlocked, so the next person to vote is the tiebreaker. You don't have to vote on all the games, just this one. The other winners are: Miami Tennessee Nebraska Colorado Oregon Florida Texas I will do the next round later tonight, after we get the final vote for this one.
