I'm looking for a good external cd-rw for my laptop...and I'd really like to get some good performance for about the cost of this one without the rebates and all ($120). I need it for archiving files, doing the occasional music cd, and backing up CD's I have. Bad deal. 6x is old technology, so you're paying for a close-out. I just bought a 16x and it makes all the difference in the world. 15 Minutes to burn a cd is too long.
I'm not so sure everyone really read your post. You're looking for an EXTERNAL drive, so it will probably be connected by USB. I'm not going to go and research it, but I'm pretty sure that USB will be your bottleneck, so a faster drive won't get you anywhere faster. But I can tell you (after a quick look at pricewatch) that you can't beat that price by more than a few bucks. I will say that if you have a IEEE 1394/firewire port on your laptop, you should spend another 40 to 50 bucks and get a faster CD-RW with that interface.
He's looking for external, not internal. Unless he has USB 2.0 or Firewire ports, 6x is gonna be about the max. I honestly haven't done much shopping around, but it looks price-competitive. I wouldn't trust a "Hi-Val" CD Burner though. I know it's just a repackaged something or other, but I still wouldn't trust it. But, it seems to be a good enough deal, I suppose?
It's a new dell laptop---bought it december of last year. I'll have to check on the USB 2. So if i spent $35 for a firewire pcmcia card, I could get a near internal speed for $40 or $50 more? Hmmm.... thanks all
Don't do it, you can definately get a 12x or 16x for a lil bit more and trust us, it's worth it. I can burn a full CD in about 7-9 minutes. here's my lil gem: Plextor 16/10/40 and it's like $123.00 before shipping. you need to shop more. rH
Yes. Maybe you need to post it in bigger letters that you're looking for an external. If you're looking for external firewire connections, be prepared to fork over some money at nowhere near the speeds of internal drives. Bang for the buck, you're getting screwed on external drives.
I'm with DoD; if you already have a firewire port, put it to use. kinda off topic but anyone seen any deals on Hard Drives? Looking for a 40gb, best deal is 99$ which isnt bad. (Maxtor,WD)
I haven't looked at the smaller drives lately, but I know you can get a 40 gig IBM from newegg.com cheaper than that. And it's the 7200 RPM model; not sure what the one you quoted the price on above is. You can get a Maxtor 40 gig for under $90 + shipping from there, too. Newegg is a great company to deal with, too.
