Who was the old play-by-play guy on the radio for the oilers that was paired with Bum Phillips?

Tom Franklin... who is still the UH Football and Basketball pbp guy.

A zillion times better than Vandemeer... I understand that at the time, they were trying to completely exonerate the ghosts of everything that was ever involved with the Oilers, but I wish they would have chosen him when he threw his hat in the running.

(btw - Russ Small was the official "color" guy... while Bum was just there to say "just fall on the ball, boy... just fall on the ball," whenever there was a fumble.)

He is... as he was on the Oilers games... but he's got a great radio voice, and whenever he gets giddy, its a "controlled" inflection (rather than the "yelling" that a lot of announcers do, or the "raspy yelling" that Vandemeer does).

Bum was also there to sing "Goodnight Irene" whenever the game was in the bag.

I really liked his enthusiasm for Oiler broadcasts. He got a little Brent Musburger at times, but overall I thought he was good.

Im not sure if I really like Vandermere..... Ware makes good comments at times, but overall I think they could do better.

i like Vandermeer. He's not a glory hog like some and he does adequate. He and Andre have a nice chemistry together

i've been disappointed in andre's radio calls this yesr. i've caught two of his television broadcasts and they're a lot better. he's seems to be tired during the texan games from the day before.

Tom: Well, who would have thought that, after Lorenzo White went down, little known Gary Brown would take the NFL by storm and rush for 1,000 in 8 games. What makes it even more amazing is that he did this in the pass-oriented Run and Shoot offense. What do you think about that, Bum?

    Bum: Yep.......

    [awkward silence]

    Tom: OK....well, it's 1st and 10 on the Browns 37 yard-line....

Is Tom Franklin related to Ron Franklin who used to be in Houston and now does college football for ESPN?

No relation at all. The worst thing was they removed Tom Franklin from play by play duty at some point soon after that. I remember Russ Small took over play by play the last few years they were in town. He was horrible I never did like his style.

Don't forget the years where it was Tom Franklin, Giff Neilsen and Bum Phillips. That was some great radio. Especially when the games were on KODA-FM.
