I still use my old Nokia 6600 from like 1995 or something that I got for about 300 bux back then. I don't know why people would spend half of their salary for a stupid cell phone. It's just a phone.

Well, clearly the people who are buying them aren't spending anywhere near half their salary on them.

whoa there buddy. $150?? try free. just go to Amazon. you can basically get all those phones free if you sign the contract (2 year).

Here's the situation I'm in. Been a loyal Verizon customer for about a decade. Well, I dropped by crackberry the other day, it got a little wet, basically crapped out. Go to the Verizon store, they can't fix it. I'm only in year 1 of a 2 year contract, so I don't "qualify" for any discounts. The new 8830 there is over $500 retail without any discount...heck, it's still expensive on the 2 year plan.

So, I ask how much cancellation is....she says $175. So I say, basically, what you're telling me, is that I can get a new blackberry with you and pay full retail of $500, or pay a $175 fee, get a free equivalent blackberry on Amazon (I'm thinking about going with AT&T and the new Blackberry Curve), and that's it.

she says, "well, yah, but nothing I can do about it here. You can try calling tech support."

I don't even know if I want to call tech support at this point. I guess I will call and see if I can get a replacement phone for free. It's either that or they lose me as a customer.

Anyone have any experience with the Curve? How about AT&T - good service, bad service? Is T-Mobile preferred?

I despise anything that has Verizon written on it. Long story....many stories.

I've been with good ol' Sprint since 1998. I am on an old plan that they've been trying to remove me from for years. But I'm not budging. :)

    It's been reliable, no complaints.

As for the luxury phones....I thought having a camera AND a speaker phone was as good as it gets. ;)

I've told myself I will never get a Blackberry, Treo, or anything of the sort. I just don't want to be that accessible.

Uhhh. The 6600 debuted in 2003. Did you mean 2005?

As far as I'm concerned, I paid $300 twice when I first got phone service for the "newest" model. They both were considered crap phones after 6 months. Nowadays I refuse to pay for a phone if I don't have to. Every two years I sign a new contract and get a new "free" phone. My latest is the Nokia 6103. No complaints, so far.

Fatty, you would be wise to not upgrade to a Blackberry or anything with more capabilities than that

I dropped my Razr in the toilet last spring. Right now I'm using an old Nokia phone (made for Cingular, because it says Cingular on it) with T-Mobile service. Is there any place you can look to find a good yet cheap unlocked phone?

    Why do you say that?

finalsbound: Your better off just finding someone with a spare. I've done that before.

Be careful and document all your conversations with them, especially if/when you decide to cancel service or alter your plan. They are in the process of trying to screw us 8 ways from sunday & have done the same to 3 other people I know, dad included.

VERTU'S don't even have a lot of capabilities, they are comparable to a free phone in that department. It's more of a statement if you own one

Do people really pay $30-40 a month to send e-mails on their phones with Blackberry service?

companies do. there are likely cheaper ways to get your email remotely, but many (most?) corporations prefer Blackberry technology. I have to get a blackberry where i work, but then it is expense-able.
