Does anyone know of any quality(or decent with little to no bugs) bbs software out there? The company I work for is wanting a bulletin board system on their intranet for use within our website. The thing is...they don't want to pay for one, they don't want all these fancy ass features(like HTML capable, editting capability, etc.), and it's use will be limited to a few hundred users. Apparently, they just want a strictly basic BBS with post and reply capabilities. No user profiles, e-mail notification, smilies, etc. . I guess it's going to be a piece of crap BBS in the end in my opinion. I could write one and that may very well be the way I am leaning. However, I thought I would explore what is available out there as writing one may be easier said than done. Maybe some of you gurus might have used some free BBS software before....I dunno. I will look around but if anyone knows of any....then please let me know. thanks ------------------
Heh, when i saw this thread i was thinking more like Wildcat, Renegade, BBBS. I guess those days are long gone though. ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?
Ah the memories... I was packing to move about 3 or 4 weeks ago and came across my original Wildcat! 4 BBS disks and my Intermail mail system. I wish I were a kid again... oh wait, I make good money, I really have no responsibilities, the only major bill I have is my rent, I have no curfews, I go shopping at 3am, I have no homework or tests, and I do whatever the hell I want... maybe I don't wish I were a kid again. ------------------ "Yes, it's true. Wasn't there one called Galaticom or something like that? Just found it on a google search Galacticomm Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Wow...thanks everyone! I found quite a few good candidates from your links and on my own. I see no reason to write one from scratch with so many existing free forums available. That would be an utter waste of time. But, I'm paid so I will do what I'm told...right . So many flavors with different levels of features. I really like the phpBB using MySQL and it's all free? Sweet! thanks fellas! Maybe we(if Clutch won't..hehe) can start one forum per Rocket player where anything goes. I guess Cato's forum would be the closest thing to Hell around. Each player could come to their forum to figure out what went wrong in the game the night before and how they should fix it . Jeff can give the forum links to the Rockets and they will distribute to their players. Gives new meaning to barroom coaching. Surf ------------------
MySQL is nice for simple non-data-intensive things like message boards, and php just rocks. I've done a little of both myself :here at my cheesy site ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?
Maybe something from here: http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Discussion_Boards/ There are probably some Perl BBS scripts also available on that site. I've seen a few CGI/Perl-based BBS's that are free... nothing fancy; actually... butt-ugly that may do what you need it to do. Can't remember where, but do a search for CGI scripts or script archives and you'll find a few. Here's one of the more popular sites just to start you out : http://worldwidemart.com/scripts/ ------------------ "Yes, it's true. Kelvin Cato DOES have plenty of heart. I ended up pretty much writing my own asp/sql server based forum. The idea/concepts are nothing new. I think my new forum rocks....it's fast. It doesn't have all the fancy features like HTML, page formatting, etc. . in this initial version. It's an intranet-based forum which will be used by three to four hundred people or so. It has a search engine as well. I disallowed all the inefficient type stuff like "show topics for last 320 days". They can pull up topics for last 35 days and, thereafter, by month for a certain historical period of time. We will see how it holds up to QA testing.... I know it's solid. I would like for it to have more features but that's the nature of the business. It meets the requirements and management likes it so.... thanks, Surf
http://yabb.xnull.com This is my fave., although there's no GUI for the installation like Ikonboard (I haven't tried out phpBB), you have to configure all the variables in a text editor.
