Okay, so I plugged out cable modem into my 5 port ethernet switch(hub). So I could have 2 computers working off the internet connection. Well one of them worked fine. No problema. But the other said it had a limited network connection, and couldn't access the internet. I've rebooted the pcs many times, and the modem, and switch etc. I've moved them to different ports on it and couldn't get the other to work. Then all of a sudden the 2nd pc started working and mine no longer works. Now my pc gets the limited connection message.

So I replaced my switch with my router and tried to get that to work. And still have the same problem. Right now I have the modem plugged directly into my pc.

But my other pc won't connect to the net saying it's a limited connection. :(

You're going to need a router rather than a hub / switch.

Maybe a winsock error, try running this program. Although if it is, then the computer shouldnt work no matter how you connect it. (either directly into the modem or via a hub/router.)

oops, missed that... try to config like....

    Code:
           modem
             |
          router
          | |
         PC1 PC2

The limited connectivity typically means that the the computer is not getting assigned an IP address, but has link connectivity. On the PC that is not working go to command prompt (Start, Run, type in "cmd"), run "ipconfig" and find the ip address, if you get a 169.x.x.x, its not getting an IP address from DHCP on the router. Run a "ipconfig /release", the "ipconfig /renew". If the pc still gets the 169 address, try a new port.

    Uprising,

with both computers hooked to the router....(Im gonna assume you are using XP) right click on the connection icon in your system tray(or the NEtwork connections applet in Control Panel) and choose Repair.

basically, your computers did not try to renew their IP address once you switched from the hub/switch to the router.

you must use as router in the configeration you are wanting.

if you have any questions....go to chat and leave the window open till I check in...I can better explain myself in real time.

THanks for the input guys, but sadly this damn thing still isn't working. I was outa town this week, but got back a few hours ago.

It won't let me renew the ip. I am running them through a router now that you guys said I should use that instead of a switch. (although I used that switch on 2 pc's last summer with NO problem. )

I'm stomped as to why it's doing this now.

I'm on one of the pc's right now with the cable modem plugged directly into it, and this is the only way the internet is workign and I can do an ip renew.

    gettign frustrated here.

At work we have people that work remote from home offices and a fairly typical problem is their home cable / dsl modem would cache the mac address of the computer and require a powercycle to remove it from the cache.

So simply.... unplug everything.... powerup the modem, power the router, connect the two. Connect the powered on pc (that you had problems with), ensure that you are getting an ip address. Connect the other pc (powered on) and try to acquire an IP address. If that does not work, switch ethernet cables to see if one is bad.
