I have a gas water heater that is less than one year old and for some reason the flame went out last night. Well last night and this morning I tried to re-light the thing. It has an 8-step process to turn it on, here's a summary: 1.STOP! read instruction before attempting to light 2.Turn gas knob to OFF position 3.Turn temperature setting to lowest position 4.Wait 10 minutes for any gas to clear 5.Turn knob to PILOT setting 6.Press RESET button all the way in and hold. Press IGNITER button check through peek hole that pilot light is lit if not immediately attempt again and if it still doesn't light repeat steps 2-5. , if lit hold the RESET button for about 1 minute and pilot should remain lit, if not repeat steps 3-7. 7.Turn gas knob to ON position 8.Set temperature OK, I follow all these steps and everything goes good up until #6. The pilot light lights but after holding the RESET button for a minute and letting go it doesn't stay lit. It did last night and I was able to go ahead with steps 7-8 and the main lights all lit up and stayed lit for at least the minute I was back there but when I went to check on it 10 minutes later the flames had died again. My question, does anybody know what the problem could be? I mean obvioulsy the gas is working because the pilot light comes on but as I said after depressing the RESET button it won't stay on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You either have a bad regulator or a blockage in the gas line, which is unlikely. Do your other gas appliances work ok?
The only other thing that uses gas in my house is the heater. I turned it on last night to check if my gas was on and it fired right up.
How difficult/expensive is that to actually fix or do I need to get a technician out here and do it or is it something the gas company deals with?
If you are mechanically inclined and now how to safely work with natural gas, then you can. Anything short of that, call a pro.
not your water heater ...find an appliance repair place 1 year old, should still be under warranty ...call the manufacturer
did you tell them its a probably with the water heater itself? a gas company has ZERO to do with fixing your appliances
Yeah I told them that and that my heater is working fine. I called somebody to come fix it though so hopefully it will be fine by tonight. Thanks
