I've had the same Seiko kinetic watch for about 5 or 6 years now. It was a gift, but I know it cost $350.

I would never have spent that much on a watch myself - but this is a nice one: Looks classic, never needs a new battery, keeps perfect time, etc.,.

And whenever I look at it, it says, "THADEUS, IT IS TIME TO MAKE SWEET LOVE," and that's sorta awesome.

Damn...watches are a place where I spend money and however
irrational it is, I still love them!

I have a few watches, as I try to make them each very distinct:

Rolex Daytona (stainless w/ Black face) - Nuff Said!

Cartier Santos (Stainless) - ($3200) - Classic, Stainless, Lightweight and clean watch.
Of course I cracked the glass and so that
and the 'tuneup' cost me $700 freaking dollars. The girl over the phone
when she sensed my discomfort after telling me the price proceeded to
say "Oh..but its SOOO worth it" STFU!

Bvlgari Aluminum Automatic ($2300)- Rubber/Aluminum frame makes it look to 95% of people as an academy rubber watch, but I love it.

U-Boat Tauchmeister 1937 - ($1000) An oversize refurbished WWII submarine watch. The face is the size of my wrist with a strong black band and a large time adjustor knob.

I have a few other watches that are for other purposes and DON'T plan on buying another one for quite some time!

My most recent one was free...It is a Kenneth Cole Silver watch, but honestly, I use my cell phone more...I had this old seiko that was a gift as well, but over 10 years old and a Gucci one that I rarely use...

First and last watch I'll ever purchase, some Movado - Only wear it when Im trying to impress a cutie or when im all dressed up (which is never).

I prefer to use my cell phone as my watch.

Are you serious? The world is surrounded by clocks. There's one in my car, and on every computer I use, and several in my house and in public buildings and in court and, basically, at least 50% of the time I can look up and see what the time is. The other 50% I don't really care what time it is, and if I do, it's really not a strain to look at the cell phone.

The worst part of carrying a watch was being asked a dozen times a day what the time was.

So, how many people really need a watch?

I do need one for my job... I like that I have a rough estimate of the altitude and temp. Also, we operate on military time which still confuses me, so I need a watch that shows 1900 instead of 7:00pm... and an alarm on a watch is much easier than carrying an alarm clock everywhere.

Now, whether I need the watch I have is another question, but I gave the specs to my wife one year and my watch was a Christmas present... I certainly would not have spent more than $50 if I was buying a watch myself.

I haven't paid for a watch in at least 10 years. When the one I have breaks, that's it; no more watch at all.
