I'm wondering if anyone can give me a hotel recommendation. I'm coming down to Houston on the April 17th and am looking for a hotel for the night of the 17th, 18th and 19th. I'm looking ideally for a place not too expensive (under a $100 a night) around the Greenway plaza / Medical Center / Downtown area, Internet access and a gym.

I'm going to look on Orbitz but would appreciate any suggestions.

    PRICELINE!

    Go here first: www.biddingfortravel.com

I got a room at the Ballpark Inn downtown (great hotel) for about $50 one night and it was terrific.

Try the Renaissance. Its in Greenway Plaza and you get access to the Houston City Club (nice gym).

Don't forget to ask for the James Worthy Special. ;)

    I always recommend Best Western.

this one is not in Greenway Plaza, but I think it's close enough

    http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?group=&propertyCode=44538#null

It's $69.99 a night. That gets you a King size bed, refrigerator, high-speed internet access (no extra cost), iron and ironing board, coffee maker, microwave, and free breakfast.

Here's another one that's in the Medical Center and is a little closer to Greenway:

    http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?group=&propertyCode=44520#null

That one is $91.56 a night and doesn't seem to have a fridge or microwave.

When you call them, ask if the room has a fridge, microwave, or dvd player.

I used to be a road warrior all over the state of Texas and Best Western has the best value by far over all competition. Hampton Inn can be pretty good as a runner up, depending on its locations.

Either do it this way if you want to bid, or try www.hotiwre.com. Both are great ways to get a 4-5 star for like 50sih bucks

hotwire has a 4-star in downtown houston for $96/night.
    Hotel Amenities
    Restaurant(s)
    Pool(s)
    Fitness Center
    High-speed Internet Access
    Business Center

the only 4-star hotels i know of downtown are hyatt, hilton, inn at the ballpark, and hotel icon. so probably one of those.

Caution: many hotels say they have amenities (such as high-speed internet) but they are optional at extra cost. Be sure you understand exactly what's included in the price when you sign up.

Use Priceline then. I bet you could get at least $20 bucks knocked off of that price.

Priceline is great for getting a 4 star hotel cheap. You will probably get a gym in a 4 star and you have a pretty good chance of getting High-Speed. As Faos stated, biddingfortravel is great to see what hotels are in what areas so you can almost pinpoint a hotel and take a lot of the guess work out of it. Also, it's great for giving you the right price to bid and how to get back to back bids in. I use AB and Priceline to get some great stays in some great places. Last time I pricelined, I got the Hyatt Regency in DC on the river overlooking the Capital building for $75 a night (I had to pay $20 a night valet but still $95 was cheap to me)

However if a gym and internet is manditory and there are hotels in that class in that area that don't have them, you may be better off going with a sure thing.

Edit: Just checked out AB and if you stay in the 4 star downtown you will be ok on gym and internet (though the Hyatt wants $10 a day for the internet). You should be getting into one of those (most likely the Hyatt) for $50-60 a day. I'm not sure about parking fees either but I'd guess around $10-20 extra for that too. Still $90 ($60+$10+$20) worst case is not bad.

I've stayed there twice, and that hotel is awesome!

    :)

The first time, I got the room off Priceline, and the second time I used AAA.

try to crown plaza on smith in down town. I am not sure what the rates are but it is relatively close. Also there is a holiday inn select on 59 near Kirby headed southbound.
