Ok, I know very little about cars and how they work so I figured I would ask here. On my way in to work this morning, I started to smell antifreeze. The temp on the engine never went up and I opened up the hood and looked to see if I could see a leek anywhere but didn't see anything. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen or what I can do to fix it?

    Its a 1999 Ford F-150.

If you are smelling it inside the cab, your heater core could be leaking.

Leep an eye on the coolant level and if it drops yet you see no coolant on the floor where you park it...it is almost a certainty its the heater core

Was it a odor just in the air or did it seem to come from your air vents?

At the end of the day check under your car.. if you see a slight puddle of something with a greenish tint to it, time to check your radiator out.

I think it was coming from the vents but I'm not entirely sure. The heat was on and it was going to defrost and the floor so it was kind of difficult to tell.

My vote would be heater core leak.

Any idea what a heater core would/should cost?

Definitely heater core. Look on the passenger side foot well (inside the cab) and see if you can find any drops of coolant. Heater cores are not too expensive to replace.

The heater core itself should only cost around $50-$60 for the OEM part. The labor will be extra unless you do it yourself.

Can anyone recommend someone in the Houston area to take this to? I work over in the Westlake (I-10 and Eldridge) area and live in The Woodlands so near either of these would be great.

I don't know about a truck, but on the mustang, the entire dash has to come out to access the heater core.

Damn.....that would make it "EXPENSIVE" rather than "not too expensive."

sorry to somewhat derail the thread, but i have a similiar problem. instead of smelling antifreeze, i smell my windshield wiper fluid. well, i only smell it when i use it and it's not a "chlorine-like" smell either. it's this pungent, "i just stepped in sh**", kind of smell. i literally want to throw up everytime i use my wiper fluids. anyone got any idea what could be going on?

Windshield wiper water reservoir is another possibility if you smelled the smell outside of the car. Those suckers can freeze over and sometimes overlooked during the *winterization* of the car.

I have a friend who is a mechanic and is the cheapest you'll find. He does great work, also. His shop is at 290 and the Beltway, and you can also drop it off and pick it up at his house over close to I-10 and Silber.

FYI: He fixed two air conditioning fans in my truck for $120, and fixed a friends interior door handle for $20.

A blonde pushes her BMW into a gas station She tells the mechanic it
Died. After he works on it for a few minutes, it is idling smoothly.

    She says, "What's the story?"

He replies, "Just crap in the carburetor"

She asks, "How often do I have to do that?"
