    Guys,

I am looking for mail server software for small office use. Maybe 3-5 PCs. Any ideas? I would prefer free, but I'm not sure if there are good stable versions for this type of thing. Any ideas would be great.

I'm afraid that mail server, free, and easy are terms which are mutually exclusive. I used to admin a mail server with 3000 users, and email is pretty complicated, trust me. Everything is great until you lose someone's mail. Why don't you just contract it out?

If you're really commited, there are several free linux distros out there that ship with industrial grade mail servers. Exim is probably the easiest real mail server to use, but it's still complicated. Postfix has the best balance of features and ease of use. And Sendmail is great once you get past the learning curve.

Honestly, you will be better off contracting it out to one of those crappy web services who will scan for virii and let you do pop3 downloads. Even if there were a free and easy SMTP mail server (and there isn't, not by a long shot) there is no easy or simple program to do SMTP virus scanning or spam filtering. For comercial software that does that well you are well over $100 on that bit alone unless you want to deal with excessively complex and sometimes ineffective open source software.

It never makes sense to even think about setting up a SMTP server with less than 20-25 people.

    Is that any good?

I basically want IMAP functionality with this. I'm not looking for SMTP at all really...

    Thanks for your help!
