Criticism of minimum wage laws generally is uninformed and arent demonstrated when it comes to the facts.

The one major criticism is that it leads to more unemployment because its an artificial increase in wages when in fact some positions according to the market would pay less. Thankfully, this argument is based purely on theory and less on fact. Research done by Economist Alan Krueger and David Card who wrote a book on this found that the demand for low wage workers is functionally inelastic. In other words, regardless of the increase in wages created by the minimum wage, employment didnt decrease.

Also, most economic research against the minimum wage tends to be purely theoretical and is based on derived models that don't use real world data. I believe that ideas like "a living wage" would probably cause some of the problems that those who oppose the minimum wage cite but a minimum wage that keeps up with inflation (which congress hasn't done lately) does little to alter employment and only serves to ensure a basic standard.

If minimum wage laws exist to ensure a basic standard...I can't understand why so many are willing to celebrate that they don't apply to 'illegals.'

Are these 'illegals' a lower class of person who shouldn't get this basic standard?

Yea I agree but sadly employers see illegals as the perfect way to circumvent the system. You pay them below minimum wage and the illegals cant do anything about it because if they speak up they'll get deported. We really have created an underclass that has been forced to do society's "dirty work" for virtually nothing.
