Probably a long shot considering the demographic here, but then I'm often surprised by the breadth of this community. Does anyone know of (or even frequent) a robust internet community for art appreciation and/or visual artists (that is not computer artistry)? I've looked around some and found a couple of places, but traffic is low in the places I've found and there seems to be a bias towards computer graphics (for obvious reasons).
Could you be a little more specific with what you want? In general, there is not a lot out there. Art historians and artists are usually limited when it comes to technology, so you don't see a lot of bbs-type communities (actually, I don't know of any arts bbs). For specific niches, though, there are groups. For example, I am with the Association of Historians of Nineteenth Century Art and they have a listserv for members and that is generally the best you can do. I was a member of a European group a few years back that was general art and art history that was free, but I think it folded and, of course, much of it wasn't in English. CAA used to have web links and such on their website (collegeart.org) that might have been decent, but they have been altering it recently so I don't think they have anything right now. You could see if artsource has links to any online organizations or communities that might interest you.
Thanks, that was somewhat helpful. I'll track down some of the names you mentioned. As for being more specific, I don't know what I'm missing. I suppose I'm imagining a Clutch BBS, except where people post images of paintings they've done and others comment and critique. The likelihood of that existing isn't high, so I'm just trying to see what is out there. The two most important aspects would be (1) contemporary visual art and (2) robust. From what I've seen, folks like to talk about themselves more than they like to talk about other people's work, which provides for some pretty short conversations.
OK, I was just checking if you were pursuing a specific interest. Yeah, I am afraid what you want doesn' t exist. I don't know that, I just highly doubt it. If you want your 1 and 2, then that would have to be an in-person gathering. Also, there are a lot of contemporary artists out there who are complete idiots and you don't want to know what they think or write about...trust me.
There is an amazing sub-forum at http://www.somethingawful.com called The Creative Convention. But it's $10 to join their forums.... Also try http://glasstire.com/messageboards/default.asp - all texas art message boards
So you mean a place where visual artists come together and argue about firing JVG and accuse each other of being YOF's ? Perhaps we can convince Clutch to start a ClutchArts forum.
