Virus which affects internet connection

    I think I currently have a virus which is affecting my internet connection . I'm on broadband at the moment. I have Clamwin Antivirus, AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and HiJack This. I did a clamwin search which removed a few files which seemed to be Trojans, but maybe it removed an essential file as after that my connection doesn't work at all. Any ideas?

    Well, I'm posting this from my other computer that's on the network so that's not the problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Go into Safe mode, remove your Network Card from Device manager, restart the computer and let it reinstall it and see if that helps any.

    The one time that happened to me was when my spyware removed something that they thought was bad and caused my computer t not have internet anymore..i went back and used a restore point and then it worked again and just didn't remove the thing it found.

    Do you even get an IP but can't get on the internet?

    Do you have a firewall installed but not running? Sometimes that causes problems (especially the McAfee one).

    After the drivers re-install, are there a bunch of yellow exclamation points next to them, and do they display error code 31? I'm the head computer technician for three dorms, and we've had problems with Adaware removing some registry keys required for network drivers to work properly. I have a fix for it I can send you if that's your problem.


    EDIT: Oh, and do you have either "Norton Internet Security" or "McAfee Security Center?" (as opposed to Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee VirusScan). Both of those programs get reeeaaal screwy sometimes, in my experience.

    Oh... and have you tried Winsock Fix? (I'm assuming you're running XP)

    I had a similar problem and ended up reinstalling the OS. I'm not smart enough to figure out any other way though. Note: the XP 'upgrade' didn't fix it; I needed to do a clean install.

    I think that Winsock app might have helped, though I figured it out in the end. Will tell what I found in a bit, could be useful in the future... !

    Reformatting is the nuclear option for this.

    Goto your device manager to see if there's any yellow exclamation points.

    If everythings okay on that front, edit LAN profile in your Network Connections tab.

    Depending on whether it's wireless or LAN, you're going to need these protocols for the profile.

    Client for MS Networks
    File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks
    MS TCP/IP v6
    NWLink NetBIOS
    NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
    Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

    If you have wireless, also install the QoS Packet Scheduler.

    If you find that, and they're all listed, uninstall each one and reinstall them. This is assuming that adaware deleted a crucial system file. Or... you can recreate a new profile and delete the old one. Whatever works.

    This should be the end of it unless it's a virus or a blocked port caused by something else.

    If any of this sounds like gibberish, I'll post step by step instructions.
