My neighbor is a veteran who has been trying to get 100% disability for a number of years now. His son is about to go to college (great kid) and because of his disability he can't afford to send him, so as a final resort he's advised me that to raise funds he will put his purple heart on E-bay.

I find it a disturbing because if he was awarded 100% disability he could use his workers comp to send the kid to college, as it stands he gets 40% even though he has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, and was wounded in Vietnam.

I don't know what to tell him, he's a proud man who has been getting the runaround from AMVETS and VFW, I wish I could help because I would hate for him to part with this prestigious award.

    Any suggestions?

Thats nice, NJ but people don't get out to the benefits much anymore. The tsunami benefit a few weeks ago was cancelled.

Financial aid / Student loans / Part time job

Where is he going to school?...HCC for a few years and then UH is not that expenseve of a combination (considering college costs). They can make it work.

My dad works but doesn't make much and my brother, my sister, and I are on financial aid. They go to private schools though, so he still has to cough up some cash. I go to A&M and I don't pay anything out of pocket. Of course, I am racking up some student loan debt.

Thats what I would do, tell that kid to get on http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and whatever school he gets into they can pull all the info from fafsa and cut him a amount for school..

I had to work my way through college. That's what this kid should do.

I just don't understand why it's taken for granted that a parent should pay their kid's college expenses.

His degree will mean more to him and he will take it seriously if he is paying for it.

If I'm an employer I would rather have the applicant that put themselves through school instead of the kid that had mommy and daddy pay.
