Theoretically , trump could declare victory and that we are done . And actually stop bombing

Iran and Israel would undoubtedly keep fighting . Iran has no reason to stop attacking Israel.

Israeli / mainstream media puts out pics and vids of devastation in Israel after a week , and then we have to go back in and help and the war would be slightly more popular at home . (They should have plenty of damage they've previously censored to release )

Right now Trump is desperate to keep oil price contained.

Sure we are spending billions on munitions , but the only thing that actually hurts us is oil price . Spending billions on munitions hurts us in the future , not the present .

If oil stays contained , we can drag this on . Irans population will suffer more and more and we have more time to set up agitators.

If oil spikes , the pressure for us to negotiate gets huge .

Absent complete destruction of either Israel or Iran this has to end at the negotiating table .

What does Iran want ? What does Israel want ?

My prediction is that we will need China to come in and help negotiate. Israel , us , and Iran have zero trust . Iran has very little reason to negotiate.

However , Iran sells most of its oil to china (that Israel/ US is stupidly blowing up btw) . God those videos of Tehran are horrifying .

I really think only china can stop this . And they might have incentives to let it play out a bit longer.

To be fair , US could have stopped this before it started , but I doubt our capability to stop it now . We could stop bombing , but Iran still feels like it needs to make us pay , otherwise we will just attack it again in half a year (or whenever) .

 

I can't think of that ever happening. Also, Witkoff and Kushner were offered everything they could hope for and refused because Israel wanted to attack Iran. Witkoff shouldn't be allowed to show his face in public.

Let me see if I can take a non-partisan angle to summarize.

* Israel and the US jointly attacked Iran, with the stated idea of regime change and, at least in some statements, re-damaging their nuclear program. Our POTUS claimed Iran was just a few "weeks" from "attacking us." (Or something close to that.)
[* My opinion but I think it's supported by fact: We received no substantial evidence that Iran was "about to" attack us, but this is reminiscent of the WMD argument for the 2nd US-Iraq war.]
* Now the conflict is seriously raging, with the Iranian regime not folding, and with a new, more conservative leader in power.
* Lots of the new leader's family members were killed in the initial onslaught. It is incredibly difficult if not impossible for most human beings to think rationally or negotiate with enemies in such a situation. I mean, he's probably a complete dick, but how would any of us feel if several generations of our family were wiped out in a surprise attack on their homes? I wouldn't be thinking about the bargaining table, myself.
* At least according to Iran's statements, and according to their history of preparing for an existential conflict with the west, they are in it for the long haul. They have evidence that Israel's existence is an existential threat to them.
* Israel is also probably in it for the long haul. Whether wrong or right, they believe Iran's existence is an existential threat to them. Israel has endured some non-trivial damage as well, probably strengthening Bibi's hold on the country or strengthening his argument that they must destroy Iran.
* Air campaigns rarely, if ever, topple regimes. Japan and Germany (WW2) and Vietnam and many other examples are available. Only the nuclear bombs made Japan surrender. The emperor there was willing to keep enduring horrific fire bombings, etc, fighting to the last suicidal soldier.

Guys, this is really, really ****ed. This isn't a light-hearted thing where liberals joke about TACO or anything for anyone to celebrate politically. It's beyond making our POTUS look bad. This also doesn't look like a "yeah, go America!" moment to cheer for POTUS and regime fans. Anyone not in the defense industry should be pretty freaking concerned about what's going to happen to global trade and inflation. Iran was ready for this, even though we have the superior firepower.

Whatever the newly ascendant US hawks do, we know this: As long as Bibi and Ayatollah v2.0 are in power, it looks like serious war for many months and quite possibly years to come, and that will absolutely have global repercussions. We can hope light ones, somehow? A relatively contained war, somehow? Fingers crossed, but serious impacts seem more likely, given the location.

Where are any of my points completely wrong, aside from my opinion in the square brackets, according to any relative non-partisan / non-cult-member?

Maybe a good time for my house to finally embrace solar panels, LOL. (Not really laughing, but don't have money for that right now, so that's why laughing/crying).
