My big takeaway is that Donald Trump's word aint worth ****.

Whatever Trump says about starting a war in Iran, we know anything he said that is truthful is a mere coincidence.

In his election night victory speech in November 2024, Trump told his supporters: “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.” Two months later, in his inaugural address, he went even further in trying to establish himself as a global peacemaker. “We will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars that we end – and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into,” he said. [...]

And yet in his first year back in office, Trump bombed seven countries: Yemen, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia and Venezuela. Early on Saturday, Trump launched his most extensive, and dangerous, military campaign so far: a war against Iran, which could spiral into a regional conflagration, especially as the Iranian regime sees this joint US-Israeli attack as a fight for its survival.

This is your reminder that there is no such thing as an autonomous weapons system and we still don't have legit AI. Just a bunch of crunching and synthesizing of digital data, much of it false or out of context accessed through logarithms built by humans with human flaws and human biases. In war, the unexpected and the uncertain are ever present. Why would you allow a system that can only draw questions and answers from things that have gone on before?

Oh, right. It would be a great way to avoid accountability. "We didn't intend to bomb that home for elderly crippled nuns, the AI did it."

If Stanislav Petrov had been an autonomous weapons system, we would not be here today.

If the Soviets had AI in 1983, Petrov would have been in no position to make a decision.
