I want Bruce Matthews to win. I even like McNair. 2. This will truly end the Oiler legacy/curse in Houston. 3. (This is the most important one) I hope to all hell this will light a fire under the asses of all of the voting casual sports fans to vote in a new arena for the Rockets when they see what Tennessee has and what we should have. I thought I was the only person who actually dreamed entire sports games. My wife thinks it is weird, maybe it isn't so weird after all. Probably does mean I should pick up another hobby though.
Shanna, But the common opponents you compare stats with were bad teams. The Rams team was built for blowouts--explosive passing offense and gambling defense that only has to stop the pass because they are playing ahead. The Titans team was built for methodical physical play. The former style facilitates the blowouts of bad teams. But with the increase pressure of tight games and the playoff intensity, it is much easier to maintain performance with the latter style. You can't discount the fact Tenn was 4-0 against the three most impressive teams this year, all of whom play more of a finesse offense (with JV being the most physical of the bunch). Further 2 of those games were on the road, and two were at home. Having said this, because of the fast track and the injuries, I would still put the Rams at maybe 5 point favorites. I should add the line has already began to correct itself, moving down from 9 to 7.5. Clearly the 9 point starting line was off, which is the main point I was making. I suspect for Tenn to win the game the game will have to go a lot like the Bills-Giants (superbowl), SF-Giants (NFC championship game just before) or Atl-Minn (last year NFC championship) game. The more balanced and physical play of the Titans (like the Giants and Atl before them) will work to their advantage if they can keep the game close by the second half. This is exactly how they won their 3 close playoff games against 3 of the better teams in the league. Having said this, I might add that all those games I mentioned could have been blowouts (or at least the favorites could have probably had too much of a lead) with a few different turn of events. Had Minn not fumbled late in the 2nd quarter, had Buff not had a turnover in the late 2nd quarter, had JV not dropped punt in 2nd quarter, and had Montana not gotten injured (all happened when the finesse teams were a head and looking to put more distance), I suspect all those finesse teams would have won the game. To conclude I have no doubt Tenn can win, and I expect a competitive game. If it is close at halftime Tenn is in good shape. However Tenn for the game must be ahead in the turnover or special teams battles. If they lose in both these areas then they will not cover.
