Melton kinda reminds me of a CF version of Pena as a prospect, both super toolsy college guys, big potential, but swings with holes and contact concerns making them fringe Top 100 guys.
Brown REALLY likes his athletes. Sometimes seems like he doesn’t care if they can do much else - he will develop the rest. I won’t pretend to know too much about the King brothers, I will just say not many people in the game know if they can hit. Not surprised the Astros and Royals are signing them. Not criticizing Brown per se - but enough of them are going to show they can hit at some point. Personally I would not have drafted Matthews. I get the Larkin comps - but Barry could actually hit.
Rod Deer and Phil Plantier have entered the discussion. Cabbage is a guy that would have ripped off some 35-45 homer seasons in the 90’s to early 2000’s after shooting raw elephant testosterone straight into his neck for a few seasons. He is just in the wrong era. As for Loperfido - I have no idea why pitchers continue to pitch him inside. With his Hack Wilson/Mel Ott type launch angle, he turns routine fly balls into rainbows in the cheap seats.
I said before the news of the Loperfido promotion came out that Melton was not ready for a call up to Sugar Land. The hole left by Loperfido may force Melton up but there is Corona already on the roster and Barber will be a contender too. I think Melton went from a 5% chance to a 45% chance to move to AAA later this week.
No this is not true. I believe Kris Gross was from Jeff Luhnow Era after Mike Elias, Sig Mejdal left for the Orioles. Gross drafted Joey Loperfido, Spencer Arrighetti, Will Wagner in 2021 Draft. Kris Gross left also. https://theathletic.com/4669062/2023/07/06/astros-gm-dana-brown-draft-guru/ Sara Goodrum is now running the Draft Now. https://www.mlb.com/astros/team/front-office/sara-goodrum

Astros minor league position player of the year winners: 2011 Jose Altuve 2012 Jon Singleton 2013 George Springer 2014 Carlos Correa (I assume, I couldn’t actually find a link showing who won that year) 2015 AJ Reed 2016 Alex Bregman 2017 Kyle Tucker 2018 Kyle Tucker 2019 Abraham Toro 2021 Luke Berryhill 2022 Yainer Diaz 2023 Joey Loperfido
All of these players except one have at least a cup of coffee in the show. The exception is Berryhill whose Google Bio now lists him as a singer.
So when does Leon get the call? Or do they keep him down and use him as trade bait if they get back into contention by the deadline?
