Log Story Short Every Evil you ascribe to BIG GOVERNMENT is because some PRIVATE COMPANY has they hand up some politicians. . .er. . .back and using them like a puppet Rocket River
Of course. It's easy to bribe corrupt government representatives and officials. That's one reason the right wants to limit the size and power of government so that they can't screw us as badly. By the way, you do understand that all of those politicians that you support in the Washington Establishment LOVE all of the private companies paying them huge bribes to look after their interests, right? When was the last time that 60 Minutes, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, etc., did a big expose on the monolithic corruption in government? Since never? Why is that? It's because they're ALL corporate owned and ALL work to serve the corrupt Washington state.
Basically you want to cut out the middle man and save the companies the time and money allow them to do those things directly That's very capitalistic Rocket River
No, I want to LIMIT how government officials can work with private companies to SCREW poor and middle-class Americans. Why do you believe that citizens who own businesses are evil but government officials are pillars of integrity?
I'm still not convinced. tl;dr: The world is a very large place beyond Google or Meta. The internet was designed to be inclusive, where you can upload a pic just taken from a phone or scan a drawing you just made. From that inclusiveness social media giants are unable to filter out ambiguously immoral content (I'll know it when I see it). Tasking them to sort out verified real content ramps up that filter from 1-5% of trafficked content to almost all content (for now). Their approach is through controlling the sources, which is currently vaporware but sold with optimistic and powerful startup lingo. That's only half to 80% of the pie...in the United States.
I would love for you to be convinced but that's not my job Well, yeah, of course it's large. The world of SW is also very large. There is unsigned software out there, from Windows to Android to iOS. It's up to users to play at their own risk. Similarly, even with a system in place for "labeling" content as AI-generated, real, etc., there will be unlabeled contents out there. It's up to the user to decide whether to consume and/or trust them or not. It's up to each platform to decide if they allow unlabeled contents or not, and of course, unlabeled contents will exist on the internet. I think you also missed or glanced over the point that I made earlier - which is creators WANT to do this themselves. They would want a tool to be able to label. For this whole idea of distingusing AI content to work, you need creators to opt-in (they can opt-out with AI that doesn't provide the method to label or the requirement to do so), platforms to expose those labels, and then finally, it's up to the users to decide how they want to consume the information. This isn't at all necessarily a top-down approach, though I'm quite sure some will try that (the EU, for one, might approach that if they don't trust or don't see an industry that would effectively already handle it on their own).
Why do you believe that government officials are evil but citizens who own businesses are pillars of integrity? (businesses that are paying the officials mind you) Rocket River Their both Evil and both have some integrity
How was that the case in Soviet Russia or the other Eastern bloc Communist countries where people lived under a dictatorship and in poverty? Or Cuba under Castro, to give you something geographically closer. There were basically no private companies. But there certainly was BIG GOVERNMENT.
You don't think the USA's embargo/sanctions had nothing to do with Cuba's misfortunes? Capitalism is great on the way up . . . but it reaches a point of diminished returns Until those returns beomce negatives Rocket River
Capitalism is another name for FREEDOM in the marketplace. I sense that you believe that citizens cannot cope without a government bureaucrat involved. Government generally restricts freedoms and diminishes our ability to create and grow wealth. May I ask, do you work in government or academia?
Even China figured out that communism was a terrible economic model and switched to a fascist system wherein private ownership is permitted.
The issue of misinformation or something else? Just making sure I’m understanding. Yes, it’s a step, but a big and critical one. Tackling the very serious and real problem of misinformation due to AI’s ability to turn fake into visually and audibly indistinguishable from real is just starting. The good news is people recognize the seriousness of the issue and are not just thinking but already taking actions on it. Often, problems from new tech are not tackled until it’s already well on its way toward a full-blown crisis.
An actual case of AI being used to spread damaging misinformation. https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/maryland-framed-principal-racist-ai-generated-voice/ School principal was framed using AI-generated racist rant, police say. A co-worker is now charged BALTIMORE -- A former high school athletic director was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly using artificial intelligence to impersonate the school principal in a recording that included racist and antisemitic comments about individuals at the school. One-time Pikesville High School employee Dazhon Darien is facing charges that include theft, stalking, disruption of school operations and retaliation against a witness. Investigators determined he faked principal Eric Eiswert's voice and circulated the audio on social media in January. Darien's nickname, DJ, was among the names mentioned in the audio clips he allegedly faked, according to the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office. More at link
I saw this story a few days ago. This part, about the instant reaction from the public and from the school to the AI-generated racist rant, helped by the spread of it through social media, is important. Don't so easily trust what you see on social media. Take the time to analyze. But unfortunately, this is going to mostly fall on deaf ears, as today's polarized or easily manipulated individuals will be quick to react and spread what they see on social media without much thought. We see it almost hourly here in the D&D. "The clip's viral circulation on social media had significant repercussions. Eiswert was temporarily removed from the school, and waves of hate-filled messages circulated on social media, while the school received numerous phone calls."
Let's just be happy it can be detected. It's more deceitful but it's really no different from any false damaging information going viral. This did take three months. If you're in this situation just make a public statement, easy to say in hindsight, I did not make these comments, the truth will come to light, we know it can be done so the truth will come to light eventually
