I think it's the Jackson-Bagwell committee keeping him back

Loperfido has a 34% k rate in AAA. Singleton has a 103 wRC+. You don’t call up a top prospect to play sparingly and you don’t call up a prospect striking out a ton in the minors to replace a guy putting up above average offensive production in the big leagues.

The Astros are handling this the right way. They’re giving Loperfido time to develop and get his k issues down to the point such that he projects as an actual good mlb hitter, and they’re playing Singleton enough to see what he can actually do before they decide whether to cut him loose. Patience is hard but smart.

And Singleton is fighting to keep his spot. I hope he continues improving.

Verlander really got shelled in his two rehab starts. Six runs (five earned) over four innings on Saturday in a minor league rehab start for Double-A Corpus Christi. Yikes…..

Bullpen is in shambles after the starter suckage over the past week. Pressly, Abreu, Montero, and Bielak are all brinking on the 4-game in 6-day range and need DNPs today. Javier needs to gives us 5 innings at least. Would gladly accept 5 IP, 3 runs, on 90 pitches right now considering the last time he faced them twice in a week.

Looking for another Martinez multi-inning special. Is Taylor still on the 25-man? Pitch him if he's available and/or Dubin too if he didn't Friday in AAA.

Hopefully the offense does its work. Keep hitting, get productive outs, and "extra" bases. Gonna be tough against Eovaldi.

And for lawd's sake, Rangers can stop getting lucky with weak contact turning into gold.

    From the minor league thread…

Numbers might show that but reality is the AA defense behind him failed miserably.

I woulda played Singleton over Abreu. I knew that wouldn’t happen once Abreu hit that double yesterday. In my opinion, singleton has earned top spot at 1B for a little while.

With righty Eovaldi, Singleton needs to be starting over Abreu today. I'm still with Dusty on the R/L match-ups

    Singleton on the season: .250 / .344 / .321

It’s better than Abreu, but those aren’t great for a 1B. He has negative WAR and an OPS+ of 98. All of these not great numbers from this year are better than his career numbers. Regression to the mean will likely be down in his case.

He’s fine as one of the last guys on the bench who can give you a spot start here and there. He is not the answer at 1B and when the other option is Abreu, the team needs to improve at the position.
